Description: The Delaware Bayshore is the heart of New Jersey’s agricultural industry. Cumberland County alone sold roughly 20% of all the Garden State’s agricultural revenue in 2017. Today, many of the state’s largest farms are in the region.

It works because South Jersey’s sandy soils and ample aquifers combine with the Delaware Bay’s moderating breezes to create a microclimate that allows farms to thrive. But as sea levels rise in the Bay, a new threat is emerging: Saltwater. Scientists warn that saltwater intrusion over and under coastal lands may make them unusable for traditional farming. But as they work to understand and counter the problem, a new opportunity may be emerging for farmers who are open to adaptation.
