- PM CARES Fund collected thousands of crores from PSUs, Indian and foreign companies, salaries of public servants and from ordinary people. When people asked where the funds were coming from and where they were spent, the government flatly refused. Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan joins Anjali Bhardwaj and Amrita Johri on this edition of Jaanne Bhi Do Yaaro to discuss India's most unaccountable fund and whether this is Electoral Bonds 2.0.
In March 2020, the PM CARES Fund was set up as India faced the COVID-19 crisis. The Prime Minister, Home Minister, Defence Minister, and Finance Minister were made ex-officio trustees. The fund uses the national emblem and runs on a gov.in domain. It was made eligible to receive CSR funding as it was set up by the central government. In less than one week it amassed over 3,000 crore and in one year collected more than Rs. 10,000 crore. PSUs transferred thousands of crores into it from their CSR funds. Employees across government departments...

In an interview to explain the deep and serious concerns India’s transgender community has with the recently introduced Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, Prof. Aqsa Shaikh, Professor of Community Medicine at Jamia Hamdard University, points out that the key error the government has made in the amendment bill is to assume that gender lies between the legs of an individual whereas, in fact, it lies in the hearts and minds of individuals. As Prof. Shaikh puts it: “Gender cannot be reduced to anatomy or verified through physical examination: it is a deeply felt sense of self.”
Prof. Shaikh points out that the amendment bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on the 13th of March, is “a fundamental shift that undermi...

- We are constantly told to do our bit for the planet. Switch off the lights, save electricity, carpool, and don't burn stubble. But in the few days of 2026 alone, while we were worrying about our carbon footprint, thousands of missiles were dropped across the Middle East. Do they not pollute the environment? Let’s look at the facts: 2023, 2024, and 2025 were the hottest years in 175 years of record-keeping. And 2026 is on track to break them all. According to the UNEP, by 2030, developing countries will need $387 billion every year to deal with climate damages. That is less than 15% of what the world spent on military budgets in 2024.
Yet, in every COP climate conference, the environmental cost of war is ignored. We talk about coal, oil, cars, and plastic—and yes, they matter. But a single day of bombing can release hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon. Entire cities are set on fire. Infrastructure is destroyed. Forests burn. And the emissions? They are never counted. He said that Iran was a “pragmatic state” and while its demand for reparations was “legitimate” all that would be discussed in negotiations. “As far as Israel is concerned, they enjoy the spectacle of conflict,” he said.

Prof. Shlaim says that Donald Trump is the only American President who is gullible enough to become part of Netanyahu’s plan for regime change in Iran. However, Prof. Shlaim believes that regime change is almost impossible to achieve from the air and what is far more likely is that the regime will survive and if Mojtaba Khamenei remains the supreme leader he is likely to be more ruthless and a hardliner. The report also urged the US to designate India as a “Country of Particular Concern” for the seventh consecutive year.
