- There has been complete lack of transparency regarding the draft legislations proposed to be taken up during the 3-day special extension of the Budget Session of Parliament scheduled to be held from April 16 to 18, 2026.
As permedia reports, the cabinet has cleared 3 bills to ostensibly pave the way for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from 2029 – an amendment to the Women’s Reservation Act (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam), a Delimitation Bill and a separate bill to extend the quota to Union Territories. The draft legislations reportedly include a proposal to raise the Lok Sabha's strength from 543 to 816 and total assembly seats from 4,123 to 6,186.
The laws will fundamentally re-shape India’s electoral democracy and impact every voter in the country. Given the far-reaching ramifications of these legislations, it is shocking that the citizens of the country have been kept completely in the dark about the contents of the bil...

- In a video released on April 14, Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin said that the Union government’s plan to push through the delimitation exercise with a constitutional amendment in the upcoming parliamentary session – even while elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are underway – was an assault on democracy and the rights of states. The entire process has been opaque, he argued, and so strengthens suspicions around it.

- In a nation once proudly called the "Pharmacy of the World," medicines are becoming alarmingly expensive. Our country has over 10,500 manufacturing units and more than 3,000 companies supplying 20% of the world's generic drugs. So why is it that 70% of out-of-pocket health expenditure in our own country is due solely to medicine costs? We are producing more drugs than ever, but our own people cannot afford them. What is going on? Could free trade agreements (FTAs) be one of the hidden reasons behind rising medicine prices? Today we break down how the government's negotiations are weakening our otherwise robust pharmaceutical sector. To make matters worse, ongoing global conflicts have reduced the supply of key ingredients used in medicines, with raw material costs rising by up to 30%. Even after a ceasefire, disrupted supply chains will take time to recover. Experts now warn that medicine and healthcare costs will rise further. So what does all of this mean for your health budget? Watc...

- The run-up to the Bengal assembly elections has seen emotional discussions on mass disenfranchisement, arguments of political betrayal, and extraordinary communal polarisation.
Missing in many of these debates is Bengal’s youth – a sizable section of whom live elsewhere in search of a livelihood. In 2011, 28.3% of Bengal was between 15 and 29 years of age. In these years, the numbers will have only grown, yet this particular age group remains largely out of sight. Is the Bengal youth happy in Bengal? Is the Bengal youth communal, and are they swayed by the argument that their job is to keep the so-called “infiltrator” out? Do they not want jobs anymore? And most importantly, what role does social media play in this summer of their discontent?
Soumitra Chatterjee, who describes himself as a content creator but whose role – through his popular YouTube channel – approximates that of a journalist and a social commentator combined, says the argument is...

- Description
- A music festival like no other, held at the Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan.
Since 1984, Lok Utsav has brought together performers from across Rajasthan to share music, storytelling, theatre and dance rooted in everyday life. It is a space of dialogue, where artists, organisers and audiences meet as equals, and where traditional repertoires are revived through improvisation.
This year’s festival was dedicated to Komal Kothari, ethnomusicologist and folklorist; Sakar Khan of the Manganiyar community, master of the khamaicha; and Tripurari Sharma, theatre practitioner and scholar.
Over three days, artists performed as equals, as much for one another as for an audience - listening, responding and improvising across forms. A Maand singer like Mangi Bai found herself in conversation with well-known Carnatic vocalist Sangeetha Sivakumar. Ghewar Khan, a khamaicha player from the Manganiyar community, performed with one of the few women ghatam p...

………………………………..
Did the Islamabad talks between America and Iran end in historic failure? After 21 hours of negotiation are the two sides closer on important issues? Or as divided and far apart as they’ve always been? Was the key problem a complete lack of trust on both sides? And now could we be heading back to war? Or will Pakistan strive to hold another round of talks before the two week ceasefire ends or collapses? And how much has Pakistan's international standing been boosted by its role in the talks? Those are the key issues I shall raise with Pakistan's former foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani.

Rules were already there and takedown orders were being issued in large numbers, but now it will further expand to censor not just publications but also comments by citizens, said Nikhil Pahwa, founder and editor of Medianama and also activist on tech policy.
Of the many changes proposed, “There is an expansion of the powers of the ministry, that it can issue advisories and circulars and all sorts of notifications, and those are basically going to be binding obligations on online platforms,” Pahwa said in a podcast discussion with Sidharth Bhatia.
And the takedown has to happen within three hours. Which means that rather than pushback, the platform will take down ...

Prabhash, former professor in the University of Kerala, to talk about what these elections could mean for Kerala and beyond.
