- Eighty-five years ago this spring, Southern California experienced what is still its deadliest-ever earthquake, a 6.4 magnitude temblor near Long Beach that killed about 120 people.
The aftershocks, in a way, have never stopped.
That’s because the March 10, 1933 quake alerted structural engineers and government officials to a particularly lethal hazard that has proven difficult to eliminate: unreinforced masonry buildings.
Most of those who died in Long Beach were felled by falling debris from those kinds of structures, which are made out of bricks, hollow concrete blocks, stones or adobe and lack steel bars and other shake-resilient components.
Building codes were changed for new construction, and the state legislature passed a measure in 1986 requiring cities in the most seismically active zones to inventory risky masonry buildings and consider ways to mitigate them, but easier said than done.

As the last members of the caravan entered the U.S. – about 70 of a total of 228 – some said goodbye to loved ones. Those staying behind include people who need more legal help before crossing into the U.S. and those who have already been deported and have slim changes of asylum.
Mario Mejia, 34, of El Salvador, said farewell to his wife. The couple planned to claim asylum together, but lawyers told Mejia his case for asylum is weak.

- The District Attorney’s Office is seeking the public’s help in finding victims of a vehicle theft crime spree that affected nine communities in San Diego County in March.
On March 27, investigators with the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, with assistance from Chula Vista police and the Sheriff’s Department, arrested two suspects after a stolen vehicle was spotted in a motel parking lot in Chula Vista.
After the arrest, the detectives recovered 144 items of suspected stolen property, which included cell phones, IDs, credit cards, purses and a laptop computer. Four stolen vehicles were also later identified.
