- Description
- State regulators are urging local elected officials to brace for retreat as scientists continue to predict sea levels will rise in coming decades and pummel beachfront communities from San Diego to Arcata.
With the prospect of evermore harrowing storms and flooding brought on by climate change, officials say that cities and towns need to start planning as soon as possible to eventually abandon or relocate everything from highways to underground utilities to beachfront homes.
“The reality is seas are rising, eroding and inundating our coast and, in some places, that means homes and critical infrastructure will be lost,” said Jack Ainsworth, executive director for the California Coastal Commission.
“Just look at the apartment buildings leaning off the crumbling cliffs of Pacifica or the homes tumbling onto Gleason Beach,” he added. “These are windows into California’s future, and we must plan for that.”

- Miguel Estudillo became San Diego County’s coyote agent in May 1891, authorized to pay the $5-per-scalp bounty set by a new state law.
Observers predicted he would be very busy, very soon.
“The coyote law is already beginning to have a salutary effect,” The San Diego Union reported. “It is expected that as soon as the information becomes general, the scalps will come in by the hundreds monthly.”
The prediction proved accurate — in his first month on the job, Estudillo paid bounties on 224 scalps — but the campaign backfired. Whether sanctioned by the government or led by sportsmen, ambitious coyote-eradication efforts have raged across the West for more than a century. Yet canus latrans has survived and thrived.

- Law enforcement officials have accused Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, a former Auburn police officer, of being one of the most wanted and prolific serial killers in California history.
Hunted for decades, the California menace believed to be responsible for as many as 12 deaths, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries in the 1970s and 1980s has gone by many names — East Area Rapist, Golden State Killer, Original Night Stalker. Now he may have finally been caught.
The Sacramento Bee reported that DeAngelo was arrested on Wednesday in a suburb of Sacramento where had had lived for more than 30 years and booked on two counts of murder. Local law enforcement announced in a noon press conference that DeAngelo was arrested after being tied to the crimes by DNA.

- The courtroom drama on Monday came as the end approached in the nearly six-week wrongful death lawsuit against Shacknai, filed by Zahau’s family.
Although county authorities found Zahau’s death to be suicide, her mother and sister haven’t accepted that ruling.
Their lawsuit alleges Shacknai battered Zahau by hitting her on the head, sexually assaulting her and manually strangling her, then staging the hanging to look like a suicide. The suit also alleges Shacknai’s conduct caused Zahau's death.
Shacknai testified that he never harmed or killed Zahau. Experts called to testify by the defendant’s lawyer said his DNA and fingerprints were not found on any key evidence.
