Good afternoon and welcome once again to the New York Fed's Quarterly Regional Economic Press Briefing. I am pleased to have this opportunity to talk with the journalists covering our region—and through you, to the people in our District. This morning I will focus on regional economic conditions, with particular attention to job polarization, which I would define as the expansion of the number of jobs at the upper and lower ends of the wage and skill distribution and a shrinking of job opportunities for those in the middle. We will see how these trends are playing out in our region. As always, what I have to say reflects my own views and not necessarily those of the Federal Open Market C...

Housing and the Economic Recovery
It is a pleasure to join you today for the annual meeting of the New Jersey Bankers Association.
In a recent speech I talked about a number of the challenges facing the economy as we seek to secure the recovery and build for the future. - Remarks by Brian P. Sack before the Money Marketeers of New York University, New York City, July 20, 2011
Thank you for inviting me here tonight to give these remarks. These events organized by the Money Marketeers provide an excellent venue to talk about the Federal Reserve's involvement in financial markets, given the focus and expertise of your group. As you know, the Federal Reserve recently completed its second round of large-scale asset purchases, known inside the Fed as LSAP2 and to everyone else in the world as QE2. With the program now in the books, I thought it would be a good time to look back and assess the experience with LSAP2. Specifically, I will discuss the effectiveness of the program relative to its stated objectives, and I will describe some the operational challenges that we faced in implementing it. Lastly, I will touch on several issues related to the potential evolution of the Federal Reserve's balance sheet going forward. As always, my comme...

Good morning. I am pleased to be in Brooklyn to speak to you and meet with the leadership of New York City's most populous borough.
In the aftermath of the financial crisis, as we wound down our emergency meetings, I asked my staff to develop an energetic outreach program so that I could visit the different parts of my district. Over time, I plan to visit all parts of the region.
Each trip gives me a chance to deepen relationships with the people whom I represent. As you may know, the New York Fed's district includes New York State; twelve counties of northern New Jersey; Fairfield County, Connecticut; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In May, I travelled through the mid-Hudson Valley to meet with community leaders, businesses, academics, ...

- Remarks by William C. Dudley, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Federal Reserve Bank of New York at the Foreign Policy Association Corporate Dinner in New York City on June 7, 2011
It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak here this evening and I would like to thank the Foreign Policy Association for inviting me. The Association has served for decades as a catalyst for developing awareness and understanding of global issues and for providing nonpartisan forums for informed discussion. Your mission is clearly a worthy one—now more than ever.
In this discussion I will highlight how the recent financial crisis and its aftermath have accelerated the shift in the relative importance of the so-called developed and emerging market economies.
I will then discuss how the global economic system needs to adapt in light of the growing relative importance of the EMEs in the global economy. I will explore the implications of these changes f...

- Description
- Many small businesses continue to struggle even though the recession has officially ended. According to the 2010 FRBNY Small Business Finances Poll, conducted in August 2010, 75 percent of regional firms reported being unable to secure all the credit that they sought.
The most recent poll findings show how small businesses are financing their operations: 68 percent included bank credit as one of their top-three sources of financing. However, notable changes occurred between 2008 and 2010: reliance on bank credit increased, especially broader use of credit cards, while commercial bank loan use fell among all but the oldest firms.

Good morning. I am pleased to be back in Puerto Rico to speak to you and meet with various communities in the Commonwealth. Each visit gives me a chance to deepen the Bank's relationship with the island. Last year I visited La Cantera and met with community leaders, business people, academics, bankers and government officials. This year I visited Goya Foods—the oldest Hispanic-owned plant in our country with subsidiary facilities in my home state, New Jersey, and upstate New York. I will also meet with a similar wide range of people to talk about what we do and to hear first-hand the economic and financial issues important to Puerto Ricans so that I can best represent all my constituents in my work at the Fed. The New York Fed's video festivals are sponsored by the Regional and Community Outreach team. By combining peer-to-peer learning with video technology, the festivals seek to advance financial literacy among young adults. The New York Fed is running two concurrent festivals: one in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and one in Puerto Rico. In each region, local college and university students are challenged to create a 30-second video—aimed at young adults—about how to build good credit.
