- Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s 12 “original structure” castles.
The main keep was built in the late 16th century and still stands today. The Kuromon Gate and Taikomon Gate were reconstructed in the 1990s.
The honmaru palace and ninomaru palace were not never rebuilt, but the ninomaru palace rooms are mapped out where the building once stood.
The black, 6-floor tower has a stunning view of the Japanese Alps.

- Matsushiro Castle was built in the 16th century in what is now Matsushiro, Nagano Pref.
It was the castle of the Sanada household from 1622 until 1868. The castle is now a ruin, with the original stone walls remaining.
Gates and bridges were rebuilt with traditional techniques following archeological evidence on their placement. The outer earthen walls were also reconstructed.
Nearby, there are several 19th-century buildings associated with the castle, including old homes which previously belonged to the Sanada and Yokota households.

- Stunning brush strokes, both in calligraphy and paintings, are on display alongside beautiful decorative art pieces at The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
The exhibitions are separated into two rooms, “Court Calligraphy” and “Imperial Patronage of the Arts.”
The calligraphy exhibition features scrolls, letters and books ranging from the 10th to the 17th centuries and includes the writings of famous courtiers like Ki no Tsurayuki.
The Imperial patronage exhibition shows works from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries and includes paintings, sculptures, and other decorative art forms.
There will be rotations of the exhibitions, with different paintings or pages of the poetry collections being shown at different times.
The exhibitions run until Dec. 22.

- YUJI Ramen TOKYO, located in Kiyosumi, Tokyo, serves ramen with broth made from tuna bones. The famous tonkotsu ramen broth is made from pork bones, but this is a rare ramen dish which broth is made from tuna bones, so it is called tunakotsu ramen.
The eatery was originally a popular local establishment opened by the previous Japanese owner, who had worked as a tuna wholesaler in New York. It was “reimported” to the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, and then opened in its current location six years ago.

The exhibition, which displays around 500 items, including some that have never been shown or exhibited before, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Kobo Abe, who was at the forefront of his time and still has many fans in Japan and overseas.

- Yomiuriland is a popular amusement park located in suburban Tokyo. I visited the park in mid-October to see the “twin” Ferris wheels, one of which opened in 1980 and is scheduled to be decommissioned in January 2025. The other new wheel is due to open soon.
It was amazing to see two Ferris wheels standing side by side. I rode the current Ferris wheel twice that day. I had a wonderful time seeing Mt. Fuji from the wheel’s car.
Yomiuriland will kick off its annual illumination attraction “Jewellumination” on Oct. 24. A new Ferris wheel named Sky-Go-Land will also begin operating on that day. Until Jan. 13, visitors can ride both wheels.

- The Donald Keene and the Tale of Genji Exhibition is currently being held in Kita Ward, Tokyo, where the late Donald Keene, who introduced Japanese literature to the world, lived for nearly half a century.
The first venue, with the theme of “classical and modern”, is the observation gallery on the 17th floor of Hokutopia near JR Oji stations. As there are no tall buildings around, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo from this observatory. The second venue, Asukayama Museum, is about 10-minute walk away and has an exhibition with the theme of “The Tale of Genji in the World.”
Both venues will be open until November 24, and admission is free. The first venue is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is open every day during the exhibition period. The second venue is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Mondays except for October 14 and November 4.

- This is a video of the Asukayama Monorail. It runs between just outside the central gate of JR Oji Station and the top of the hill, and anyone can ride it for free.
It covers a height difference of about 18 meters in 2 minutes, and is fully air-conditioned and wheelchair and stroller accessible. The shape of the vehicle is similar to a snail, so it is called “Asukargo”.
At the top of the Asukayama, there are parks and museums, as well as a tram that used to run in central Tokyo and a steam locomotive on display.

- An exhibition by Keiko Miyamori and Hiroko Masuko, Cultivating Time: The Practice of Two Artists, is being held at GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku, near Ryogoku Station on the JR Sobu Line and the Oedo Subway Line, through October 19th.
Miyamori creates works in the form of jutaku, tree rubbings, called TIME, and Masuko creates drawings everyday. Through the creation of works that accumulate day by day, the two artists confront their own senses and cultivate them. This exhibition explores the connection between the individual and the whole from the sense of the two artists, whose works and places of production are different.
The gallery, which was once a paper factory, has been converted into a wonderful space that has retained the original beams and pillars.

- It takes only about 50 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Joban Line to reach Toride Station in Ibaraki Prefecture. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk to a small pier on the Tonegawa river. This is one of the starting points for Ohori no Watashi, a ferryboat service operated by the city of Toride.
