The route is one of the five major highways developed during the Edo period (1603-1867) starting from Nihombashi in Edo (present-day Tokyo). Okabe-shuku is now in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture.

The facility is officially called the University Art Museum Toride Annex Storage and was completed in 2024. The reinforced concrete building has three stories and a total floor space of about 2,200 square meters.
It is normally closed to the public, and able to store art-related materials and students’ works, which continue to increase in number each year, for the next 20 years.

Nature Studio opened in July 2022 on the site of what was municipal Minatoyama Elementary School in Hyogo Ward, Kobe.
The Minatoyama Aquarium is especially popular. It is on the first floor, which was once home to a science room, library and other special-purpose rooms. About 250 species of fish, birds, mammals and other creatures are displayed at the aquarium, which operates under the concept of “talking with living things.” The aquarium has generated a buzz because visitors can come in close contact with the fish and other creatures while experiencing the vestiges of the old school. About 150,000 people have visited the facility each year since it opened.

- Born in Greece and raised in Ireland, author Lafcadio Hearn, known for such ghost stories as “Miminashi Hoichi” (Hoichi the Earless) and “Yuki-Onna” (The Snow Woman), lived in the Matsue residence with his wife Setsu for about five months from June 1891 before moving to Kumamoto.
Lafcadio Hearn’s Former Residence was originally a samurai residence that belonged to the Negishi family, who were retainers to the Matsue domain.
Hearn (1850-1904), whose Japanese name is Koizumi Yakumo, came to Matsue and worked as an English teacher. He deeply admired Japanese culture and tradition and wrote many books.
In his former study, you can find a replica of his desk. As Hearn had poor eyesight, the desk was built much taller than standard ones in order to help him see.
Those visiting the residence can enjoy the scenery once loved by Hearn, including the Japanese garden that was created in 1868.

The Tachineputa Festival is one of the key annual events for the northern city and people from across Japan and beyond come to see it.
The three main festival floats, each around 23 meters tall, stand taller than many of the buildings they pass.
Participants in the festival chant “yattemare” as they push and pull with all their might to move these roughly 19-ton behemoths around the city.
Float designs include famous figures drawn from many sources, including history, myth and literature.
The people pulling smaller floats are able to run and spin them to elicit cheers from the crowd.

The cherry blossoms are beautiful in spring, but the castle is appealing in all seasons. Depending on when you go, you can see camellia flowers, lush greenery or fluffy snow.

The main keep was built in the late 16th century and still stands today. The Kuromon Gate and Taikomon Gate were reconstructed in the 1990s.
The honmaru palace and ninomaru palace were not never rebuilt, but the ninomaru palace rooms are mapped out where the building once stood.
The black, 6-floor tower has a stunning view of the Japanese Alps.

- Matsushiro Castle was built in the 16th century in what is now Matsushiro, Nagano Pref.
It was the castle of the Sanada household from 1622 until 1868. The castle is now a ruin, with the original stone walls remaining.
Gates and bridges were rebuilt with traditional techniques following archeological evidence on their placement. The outer earthen walls were also reconstructed.
Nearby, there are several 19th-century buildings associated with the castle, including old homes which previously belonged to the Sanada and Yokota households.

The exhibitions are separated into two rooms, “Court Calligraphy” and “Imperial Patronage of the Arts.”
The calligraphy exhibition features scrolls, letters and books ranging from the 10th to the 17th centuries and includes the writings of famous courtiers like Ki no Tsurayuki.
The Imperial patronage exhibition shows works from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries and includes paintings, sculptures, and other decorative art forms.

- YUJI Ramen TOKYO, located in Kiyosumi, Tokyo, serves ramen with broth made from tuna bones. The famous tonkotsu ramen broth is made from pork bones, but this is a rare ramen dish which broth is made from tuna bones, so it is called tunakotsu ramen.
The eatery was originally a popular local establishment opened by the previous Japanese owner, who had worked as a tuna wholesaler in New York. It was “reimported” to the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, and then opened in its current location six years ago.

The exhibition, which displays around 500 items, including some that have never been shown or exhibited before, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Kobo Abe, who was at the forefront of his time and still has many fans in Japan and overseas.

- Yomiuriland is a popular amusement park located in suburban Tokyo. I visited the park in mid-October to see the “twin” Ferris wheels, one of which opened in 1980 and is scheduled to be decommissioned in January 2025. The other new wheel is due to open soon.
It was amazing to see two Ferris wheels standing side by side. I rode the current Ferris wheel twice that day. I had a wonderful time seeing Mt. Fuji from the wheel’s car.
Yomiuriland will kick off its annual illumination attraction “Jewellumination” on Oct. 24. A new Ferris wheel named Sky-Go-Land will also begin operating on that day. Until Jan. 13, visitors can ride both wheels.

- The Donald Keene and the Tale of Genji Exhibition is currently being held in Kita Ward, Tokyo, where the late Donald Keene, who introduced Japanese literature to the world, lived for nearly half a century.
The first venue, with the theme of “classical and modern”, is the observation gallery on the 17th floor of Hokutopia near JR Oji stations. As there are no tall buildings around, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo from this observatory. The second venue, Asukayama Museum, is about 10-minute walk away and has an exhibition with the theme of “The Tale of Genji in the World.”
Both venues will be open until November 24, and admission is free. The first venue is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is open every day during the exhibition period. The second venue is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Mondays except for October 14 and November 4.

- Unused buses, renovated and reborn as mobile wood-fired saunas, are being rented out to hot spring facilities, campsites, event venues and other places across the country. The buses are called Sabus, or sauna buses.Originally, there was only one Sabus, and it was based in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. However, since this summer’s completion of the second Sabus, which is based in Kawasaki, there are more opportunities to see the mobile sauna in eastern Japan.

- This is a video of the Asukayama Monorail. It runs between just outside the central gate of JR Oji Station and the top of the hill, and anyone can ride it for free.
It covers a height difference of about 18 meters in 2 minutes, and is fully air-conditioned and wheelchair and stroller accessible. The shape of the vehicle is similar to a snail, so it is called “Asukargo”.
At the top of the Asukayama, there are parks and museums, as well as a tram that used to run in central Tokyo and a steam locomotive on display.

- An exhibition by Keiko Miyamori and Hiroko Masuko, Cultivating Time: The Practice of Two Artists, is being held at GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku, near Ryogoku Station on the JR Sobu Line and the Oedo Subway Line, through October 19th.
Miyamori creates works in the form of jutaku, tree rubbings, called TIME, and Masuko creates drawings everyday. Through the creation of works that accumulate day by day, the two artists confront their own senses and cultivate them. This exhibition explores the connection between the individual and the whole from the sense of the two artists, whose works and places of production are different.
The gallery, which was once a paper factory, has been converted into a wonderful space that has retained the original beams and pillars.
