- In Japan, March is a time for graduation ceremonies. At most universities and graduate schools, it’s traditional for outgoing students to attend in their student uniforms, suits or kimono.
Things are quite different, however, at the graduation ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students at Kanazawa College of Art in Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. Outgoing students are allowed to attend in unique costumes of their own choice.

That’s what happens in Peter Brown’s new novel, “The Wild Robot.”
It begins when a box containing a robot named Roz washes up on a lonely island after a shipwreck. There are no people on the island, so Roz studies the island’s animals to learn how to live there.
For example, she learns the value of camouflage by studying a stick insect.
Can you see where Roz is camouflaged in this grove of ferns?

The island has many types of scenery, so Roz develops many types of camouflage.

- Nankai Electric Railway Co. showcased a special train to residents of the area along the Kada Line at Kada Station in Wakayama on April 28. Themed on red sea bream, Medetai Train (“tai” means red sea bream in Japanese) was introduced as part of a Kada Line project to promote the railway, which operates in an area where fishing is a major industry. Red sea bream is one of the main products in the area. With a pattern of fish scales drawn on its pink body, the train also includes upholstery and fixtures with a variety of designs in the motif of the fish. It began operating from April 29.
