- This week, a few news stories caught my attention.
Former congresswoman Katie Porter said she supports taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, during the Democratic California governor’s debate.
Closed-circuit television cameras helped catch two men who violently attacked a 77-year-old man in Seattle, undermining mayor Katie Wilson’s claim that “turning on more cameras won’t magically make our neighborhoods safer, but it will certainly make our neighborhoods more vulnerable.”
And the judge presiding over the case of accused White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooter Cole Tomas Allen said about his jail conditions: “At a minimum, I should be apologizing to him. We are obligated to make sure he’s taken care of. Mr. Allen, I’m sorry that things have not been the way they are supposed to.”
In each example, a form of empathy was on display. But what happens when it misfires?

- Are UFOs Actually Demons in Disguise?
- Date posted

- Description
- Speaking on a podcast earlier this year, Vice President J.D. Vance—a convert to Catholicism—theorized that UFOs might be a demonic trick.
“I don’t think they’re aliens, I think they’re demons,” Vance said. When asked to expand, he noted that “every great world religion, including Christianity, the one I believe in, has understood there are weird things out there. . . there’s a lot of good out there, but there’s also some evil out there.”
Vance made sure to note that his views weren’t grounded in any sort of secret information to which he was privy, saying he had not had time to dive into any confidential government information about UFOs. But the idea that UFOs should be seen through more of a religious lens than a strictly scientific one is not new, and one we’ve even touched on earlier.
As we close out this four-part series about what everyday Americans should think about UFOs, we are joined by two people who have put a...

- The Middle East remains in turmoil. Trump is waging “Project Freedom” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz; the war with Iran continues; the United Arab Emirates just dramatically departed from OPEC; Israel is still fighting on its northern border with Lebanon; and Hamas’s grip on Gaza persists.
It can be hard to keep track of this—much less make sense of it. Which is why I sat down with Free Press Middle East analyst Haviv Rettig Gur to ask him about all of it. We also examined escalating settler violence in the West Bank, and why Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir tacitly supports it; UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese’s appearance on the cover of British Vogue; the latest Gaza flotilla; and likely presidential candidate Rahm Emanuel’s recent declaration that “the days of taxpayers subsidizing Israel militarily are over.” And overall, can the region shake its martyrdom ideology?

They dig into why sports matter so deeply: tribal belonging, meritocracy, tradition, and the rare intensity of collective experience that borders on the religious. Thompson also explains why the most passionate fandoms often emerge in poor, deindustrialized towns. They also examine the controversies and contradictions of modern sports, from coaches and universities running de facto professional programs to the rise of gambling and debates over salary caps.

- Some of you may know the name Changpeng Zhao—or CZ, as he’s almost universally known in the tech and finance worlds—as crypto’s richest man. Forbes calculated his net worth as greater than $110 billion. That puts him ahead of Bill Gates, though CZ denies it.
He founded Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, transforming it from a start-up in 2017 into one of the most powerful companies in finance.
Then, in November 2023, CZ pleaded guilty to violating the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act by failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. He stepped down as CEO and paid a $50 million fine, while Binance paid $4.3 billion.
When I asked him about this charge, he acknowledged that Binance’s “earlier compliance program was weak,” and that Binance “could have done better.”
The case also led to a four-month sentence at a correctional facility in Long Beach, California, where he taught fellow inmates—...

The president’s announcement, at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, pushed the conversation about UFOs yet another step closer to the mainstream and further away from the swirl of conspiracy culture, even though Trump also sounded like he hasn’t made up his own mind about what to believe. “I figured this was a good crowd because I know you people, you’re really into that,” he said with a chuckle. “I don’t know if I am.”
Why did the president treat the UFO announcement so lightheartedly? Was he trying to lower expectations? Or send a signal that he isn’t alarmed by what the government has found? What should we be looking for when the documents are released?

- Elise Stefanik on the ‘Rotten’ Ivy League, Mayor Mamdani, and Why She’s Leaving Congress
- Date posted
- Description
- Two years ago, in the wake of burgeoning antisemitism after Hamas’s October 7 attacks, Elise Stefanik sat across from the presidents of Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania and asked them a simple question: Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate your university’s code of conduct? Their non-answers—“it depends on the context”—shocked the country. A billion people watched the clip in a week. For me, and for students who had actually attended these schools and saw the way rising antisemitism on campus had been ignored, their responses weren’t surprising at all.
Since then, President Donald Trump has made university accountability central to his term—the federal government has withheld hundreds of millions in funding from those institutions that have not complied. University presidents have resigned. Columbia University reached a $221 million settlement with the Trump administration. The Department of Jus...

- Today the antitrust trial of Live Nation and Ticketmaster is entertaining closing arguments at a Manhattan federal courthouse. The Justice Department filed its lawsuit against the company back in 2024, accusing it of anticompetitive practices in artist management, concert promotion, venue ownership, and ticketing. Last month the Justice Department reached an out-of-court settlement with Live Nation, which agreed to certain changes—like curbing service fees and allowing venues to work with competing platforms—without admitting wrongdoing. But the legal fight wasn’t over. More than two dozen states rejected the deal, arguing it did not go far enough, and pressed on with the trial, which is now reaching its conclusion.
For Tommy Dorfman, an independent promoter who filed his own suit against Live Nation 15 years ago, the stakes are personal. Dorfman, known for putting on incredible concerts in the 2000s, says Live Nation not only destroyed his career but also reshaped t...

- Late last night, the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. But the first day has already proven rocky: Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel all reported missile and drone attacks from Iran; Israel carried out major air strikes against Hezbollah, raising questions about whether Lebanon is included in the ceasefire; and Iran is attaching a series of stringent conditions to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
All of this comes as U.S. and Iranian delegations are expected to meet in Pakistan on Saturday to discuss two competing peace plans whose provisions are fundamentally at odds with each other. The U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President J.D. Vance, who has expressed hesitance about the war from the very beginning.
It’s a crucial juncture in a war that has now stretched on for more than five weeks, with global ramifications. And few people are better suited to assess it than Free Press columnist Niall Ferguson. Today, I...

- On Wednesday night, President Trump delivered a 19-minute address on Iran. As expected, he stressed his accomplishments: “In these past four weeks, our armed forces have delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield. . . . Iran’s navy is gone. Their air force is in ruins. Their leaders, most of them. . . are now dead.” And he issued a threat to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Age.”
Notably absent, though, was any clear scenario for how the war ends—or, more urgently, how the Strait of Hormuz gets reopened. A speech that was supposed to inform and reassure the public left a long series of unanswered questions:
Has President Trump overstated American gains? How will the U.S. deal with Iran’s remaining nuclear assets? Will it put boots on the ground to seize or destroy nuclear material—and what would such a mission look like? Would the U.S. try to seize Kharg Island? How could it reopen the Strait of Hormuz?
