- With 48 hours to go before the local and devolved elections, the verdict seems to be in already: the public hates Sir Keir Starmer and the two main parties – and many will never vote for Labour or the Conservatives again.
That is according to new polling that found only one in seven voters who have abandoned those parties would return if Reform UK or the Green Party failed to deliver change. The survey also showed an appetite for NHS reform and higher taxes on big business and the rich.
Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley are joined by Scarlett Maguire and Lee Cain, the pollsters behind the findings, to understand why the public is losing faith in politics.
Meanwhile, they discuss the state of the campaign trail, with Kemi Badenoch clashing with a pro-Palestine heckler and Zack Polanski’s poll ratings tanking after his row with the police.

- Is the US-Iran war about to restart amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz?
Donald Trump has launched Project Freedom - a US Navy mission to break the Iranian blockade imposed since the beginning of the war. However, while the White House has framed the escort of neutral vessels as a “humanitarian gesture”, Tehran sees it as an escalation. Iran has fired missiles and drones at ships and an oil port in the UAE, and today says it is “just getting started”.
Roland Oliphant and chief foreign affairs commentator David Blair discuss the latest updates and why both sides are now likely locked in a downward spiral, putting us “one step” away from renewed all-out fighting.
Plus, former US Navy submariner Bryan Clark, director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology at the Hudson Institute, explains why America must put more force into the Strait of Hormuz if it wants to win against a patient enemy like Iran. He also ...

- Within living memory, Tehran ruled an oil-rich great power brimming with intellectuals inspired by British democracy. So how did it become an impoverished rogue state at war with the West?
In this special Bank Holiday edition, Ali Ansari, professor of Iranian history at the University of St Andrews, takes Roland Oliphant through Iran's tumultuous modern era: from the 1906 Constitutional Revolution and the 1953 coup, to the 1979 ousting of the shah and the 2026 US assassination of Ali Khamenei.
From the blunders of the unlikely "midwife" of the modern Iranian state - Great Britain - to the catastrophic decisions of successive Supreme Leaders after the founding of the Islamic Republic, he charts the course that shaped the country Donald Trump is fighting today.
How do the myths overshadow the facts of the CIA's 1953 coup and the Iran-Iraq war? Why is the regime so obsessed with enriching uranium and fighting Israel and America? And is the UK guilty...

Two years ago, polling suggested that the Scottish Labour Party, led by Anas Sarwar, would oust the SNP. Now, the polls paint a very different picture – one with much less red in it.
Despite the SNP’s poor record of delivery on devolved public services, such as education and health, the anger towards Westminster means the nationalists are on course to remain the largest party. Some data suggest they could secure a majority.

- A man arrested over a terror attack on two Jewish men in Golders Green had a history of serious violence.
The two victims, one aged 76 and one aged 34, were stabbed near a synagogue in north London on Wednesday morning and were taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Speaking at the scene, Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, said the alleged knifeman, 45, had a history of violence and mental health issues.
Counter-terror police are now leading an investigation into the incident, which marks an escalation in recent attacks on the Jewish community in north London.
Police were called to Highfield Avenue, a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood, at around 11.15am after receiving reports of a man wielding a knife.
The man had been detained by a Jewish security group by the time officers arrived, after he had stabbed the two Jewish men.

- From the Strait of Hormuz to Lebanon, the Iran war has seen the West’s foes adopt asymmetric warfare with growing efficacy.
Fresh off the boat from the Omani side of the Strait, Adrian Blomfield joins Venetia Rainey and Roland Oliphant to share insights from his reporting. He explains how being out on the busy, misty and historic waterway helped him to understand why it is almost impossible for the US to counter Iran’s so-called “mosquito” fleet of fast boats.
Meanwhile, Jerusalem correspondent Henry Bodkin discusses the growing threat posed by Hezbollah as it adopts Ukrainian drone tactics to fight Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. He talks through a particularly worrying video showing the terror group flying a fibre-optic first-person view (FPV) drone at a medivac helicopter.
Plus, Venetia and Roland run through the latest updates from today, including Donald Trump’s new threat to Iran and bad signs from the Iranian economy.

- President Trump: the underlying criticisms hidden in King Charles' speeches

- Description
- In a 2,624-word speech to the US Congress, the King had no fewer than 12 standing ovations and elicited genuine laughter from even the most polarised Democrats and Republicans.
His address, which focused on the shared history and unity of the US and Britain, won over Donald Trump, who later said: “He made a great speech. I was very jealous.”
On closer inspection, his speech was peppered with gentle rebukes of the US president: his attacks on Nato, his wavering support for Ukraine and his derision of climate policies.
It was only the second time a British monarch had addressed Congress and it came at a fraught moment in US-UK relations.

- Sir Keir Starmer will face his final PMQs before an expected Labour wipeout at next week’s local elections.
The Prime Minister is to take questions in the Commons at midday before the prorogation of Parliament in advance of crunch votes across England on May 7.
Labour is on track to lose about 2,000 council seats and is also forecast to endure heavy defeats at the Scottish and Welsh elections on the same day.
The local elections represent the next moment of jeopardy for Sir Keir’s premiership after he avoided an ethics inquiry over whether he misled Parliament over the Mandelson scandal.
On Tuesday, MPs voted to prevent him being investigated by the privileges committee, which looked into Boris Johnson’s involvement in partygate, by 335 votes to 223.
Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, is likely to scrutinise Sir Keir further over the appointment, while the publication of more of the Mandelson files is expected when Par...

Earlier in the day, the King had suggested that Nato was “more important than ever”, given the political climate.

The King praised Nato and urged Donald Trump to help defend Ukraine in a pointed speech to Congress.
In a speech aimed at smoothing over tensions between Britain and the United States, the monarch reminded the president of Britain’s role in the alliance defending America after 9/11.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump told The Telegraph that he was strongly considering pulling the US out of Nato after it failed to join his war on Iran.
The monarch reminded Congress that the only time that the Nato military alliance’s collective defence had been invoked was after the September attacks on the United States.
