Will Sir Keir resign? And who would replace him if he does? As Westminster waits on tenterhooks, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley consider how the situation might play out.
They are joined by Karl Turner, the suspended Labour MP, who calls the situation “barmy” and offers the damning assessment that “on the doorstep, Keir Starmer is more toxic than Jeremy Corbyn ever was”.

- One of Sir Keir Starmer’s closest Cabinet allies refused to rule out the Prime Minister stepping down and said he was “listening” to calls for his resignation.
Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, failed to say that Sir Keir would lead Labour into the next general election ahead of a Cabinet showdown over his future at 9.30am.
At the weekend, Sir Keir said he wanted to govern for a decade and would fight the next election, expected in 2029. However, his last-ditch attempt to save his premiership with a reset speech on Monday backfired and led to dozens of Labour MPs demanding that he quit following Labour’s local elections bloodbath last week.

When told that Labour MPs were considering ousting Sir Keir after his address at 10am, Peter Kyle, the Business Secretary, said: “Today is a big moment, I’m not saying it’s not... We are convulsed as a party as to what just happened.”
Mr Kyle promised Sir Keir would focus on issues including Britain’s ties with EU, economic growth, and the opportunities on offer for young people.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “If we can focus on those areas and we can show that we can meet the scale of those challenges, and that we are willing to strain at the bit and throw everything including the kitchen sink at those areas ... then I think we can start generating a bit of hope and optimism that we can get a grip on these things, deliver it in a way that people feel.”

- For those with long enough memories, Sir Keir Starmer’s belligerent insistence that he is “not going to walk away” may sound tonally identical to the words of another beleaguered leader from the past.
In November 1990, Margaret Thatcher cheerfully told guests at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet that she was “still at the crease” despite predictions of her demise.
The following day, her deputy, Geoffrey Howe, made his famous resignation speech in the Commons, a leadership contest ensued, and nine days later she was gone.
After the disastrous results for Labour in Thursday’s elections, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Starmer is in similar territory.

Mainstream, a soft-Left pressure group, blamed the party’s dire local election results on a “failed political experiment at the top of the Labour Party that has put control, centralisation, and factional advantage before the founding principles of our movement”.
The group demanded “an orderly transition and a genuinely open, democratic debate about both who and what comes next”.
The statement will fuel further speculation that Mr Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, could mount a leadership challenge against Sir Keir in the wake of Labour’s election bloodbath.

Even if the president is right this time and a US-Iran agreement is about to be announced, will it cover anything more than reopening the strait?
What about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, particularly its 440kg of highly enriched uranium, and the regime’s surviving arsenal of ballistic missiles, along with its sponsorship of terrorism?
That leaves Trump with three options, all with huge disadvantages.

- Description
- The world’s first robot monk has been ordained into Buddhism at a South Korean temple.
In an attempt to popularise the religion among young people, the 4ft 3in humanoid led a procession of monks at Jogye Temple, Seoul, on Wednesday to celebrate the Buddha’s birthday on May 24.
The android, named Gabi, wore grey and brown Buddhist garb as it was consecrated by the country’s largest Buddhist sect, the Jogye order.
During the ceremony on Wednesday, one of the monks asked: “Robot monk, please reply with palms together, ‘Yes, I will devote myself.’”
“Yes, I will devote myself,” replied Gabi, before one of the monks placed a rosary around its neck.
It was told to respect life, not damage other robots or objects, follow humans and not speak back to them, not to act deceptively, and to save energy and not to overcharge.

- The focus of the US-Iran war rests once again on the Strait of Hormuz, is there any way to get it open again?
Since Donald Trump cancelled Project Freedom, Iran’s chokehold on the vital waterway is as tight as ever. But James Parkin has some ideas. The former Royal Navy rear admiral was in charge of the task force that broke the last attempted IRGC shut down in 2019, and tells Roland Oliphant that the US could do it again - if it really wanted to.
He also explains what it is like fighting the fanatical but talented sailors of the IRGC navy, and why he thinks their claims to have mined the Strait are probably lies.
Plus, The Telegraph’s foreign correspondent Akhtar Makoii gives the view from Iran amid growing expectations of an imminent peace deal today, and Venetia Rainey looks at why Israel has suddenly bombed Beirut despite a ceasefire. - As the country goes to the polls in crucial local and devolved elections, The Daily T asks: Is Zack Polanski a foolish ideologue, a dangerous charlatan, or both?
A Telegraph exclusive has exposed the Green leader’s “hypocrisy” on anti-Semitism. Just a week ago, Polanski shared a social media post criticising the police’s conduct when arresting a man suspected of stabbing two Jewish men in Golders Green.
Yet now it has emerged Polanski vowed to get a “grip” on the scourge of anti-Jewish hatred while campaigning to become London Mayor.
As his personal poll rating tanks, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley explain why Polanski’s apparent flip-flopping on anti-Semitism and the growing Islamist support for his party make him a danger to Britain.

- As the hours tick down to Thursday’s local election polls, things are getting ‘serious’ for Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
While it is Labour that is braced for a ballot box drubbing, the Conservatives are also on course to lose hundreds of seats, mainly to Reform UK.
On the eve of polling, The Telegraph grabbed a ten minute taxi ride with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to see assess the party leader’s mood.
Driving to her first campaign stop in a Conservative-branded black cab, Ms Badenoch said she hoped to spread the message that her party was the “sensible alternative” to failure from Labour failure or populism from Reform and the Greens.
“I’m saying right now, there’s only one serious party - that’s the Conservative Party,” she said.
“The Greens are away with the fairies. Goodness knows what the Lib Dems are up to. Reform are telling people whatever it is they want to hear, but they don’t know...

In this episode, the Rabbi reveals what it is truly like to be self-conscious of being Jewish in Britain in 2026, calling the current rise in attacks "a sad moment for Britain" as he stresses that "antisemitism is not a Jewish problem, it's a societal problem" and that unchecked hate narratives on social media have "incubated radicalisation" in the country.

- How did a contagious rat virus get on board a ship with supposedly watertight rodent prevention policies?
The working theory is that the untreatable Hantavirus was brought aboard by a couple travelling in South America.
The outbreak has already claimed the lives of multiple passengers on the MV Hondius – while the rest remain stranded on the vessel near the Canary Islands.
The WHO are now investigating whether the Dutch couple – who were later flown to Johannesburg, where the woman died – inadvertently sparked the health emergency, by contracting the virus from rodents during their travels.
