Abraham, an insatiable reader and adoring uncle, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in the Marines, turning to alcohol to escape. And when the San Francisco resident sustained a brain injury in a street attack in 2015, he developed dementia and seizures.
The siblings spoke almost every day, Alexandra reminding Abraham to eat or to take his medicine. They sat together at church in the Mission. They celebrated holidays at Alexandra’s home, where he would squeeze her daughter in bear hugs. Their phone calls ended with “I love you.”
Alexandra believed her brother couldn’t care for himself. So she asked his doctors to evaluate his mental capacity. She needed a specific document to ask a judge to appoint her as his conservator, giving her the power to make medical decisions for him even if he was resistant. She believed he didn’t understand how si...

- Date posted
- Description
- Join Chronicle writer Janelle Bitker for a video chat and demo with baker Raquel Goldman of Norte 54, in partnership with CUESA. Raquel will show you how to make a Mexican-inspired galette using stone fruit from the farmers market and answer your baking questions.
Norte 54 offers modern Mexican baked goods focusing on traditional pan dulce, using seasonal produce and local organic ingredients. Born in Mexico, Raquel Goldman moved to Miami at the age of five, but Mexico remained a formative part of her childhood as she returned every summer to visit her grandmother. After studying art in college and starting a family in the States, she enrolled in San Francisco Cooking School, which led to an externship and later a job at the restaurant Nopa. In 2020, she started Norte 54 as a pastry box delivery program, while popping up at farmers markets with a rotating menu of pan dulce, such as cochas, novias, and more.
You can find Raquel at CUESA’s Ferry Plaza Farmers ...

- Content warning: This video contains a story of sexual assault and/or violence which may be triggering to survivors.
For Latashia Govan AKA Sgt. Die Wies, burlesque is a way to address body-image stereotypes and provides a safe, supportive community that helped her to "embrace my imperfections" and to see herself as a survivor.
“It’s so much more than taking off your clothes and a lot of people don’t know that. They think that you’re just up there to be a sexual object,” Govan says. “I can go out there and use my body to say things my mouth can't."
