- When painter Richard Louis Perri moved to San Francisco in 1968 - a young man "with flowers in my hair," as he likes to say - he would wander the grimy industrial neighborhoods South of Market looking for a connection to his new city. He fell in love with the small java houses frequented by blue-collar longshoremen that served as way stations between home and hard work. At places like Red's Java House, Wolf's Lunch, Walt's Diner, the Triangle Sandwich shop and Carmen's, Perri found a lifetime of artistic inspiration.

His record is one minute and two seconds - a far cry from the Guinness World Record of 6.24 seconds, but still pretty good. His older brother taught him the secret to solving the puzzle five years ago. It took about a week to understand the basic steps, but once he learned them, he didn't forget.

- Edith Greene has been a Chantey Sing regular since 1989. At the most recent sing, she and her daughter Judith Greene-Janse, and granddaughter Jasmijn Janse were singing together in the front row. That night was Jasmijn’s first time leading a song, which she planned as a present for her grandmother.
Every month hundreds of people gather Eureka, a ship, at Hyde Street Pier to take part in a sea chantey sing a long.
