- Illegal Dumping Is Pervasive in Oakland Encampments. How Homeless Residents Are Fighting Back
- Date posted
- Description
- Last year the city of Oakland collected about 37,000 cubic yards of trash from homeless encampments. That’s more than can fit in an Olympic-size swimming pool.
But homeless residents aren’t to blame for most of the mess. According to the Department of Public Works, most of that trash is not generated by the homeless, but illegally dumped by housed residents.
Vincent Ray Williams co-founded Urban Compassion Project to address dumping in encampments, and to serve as an informal liaison between unhoused residents, police and city officials, during encampment clearings.

Scott’s move means the city could operate without the agreement — known as a memorandum of understanding or MOU — for months or even years.
Portions of this video are censored. This was done because The Chronicle's questions and Chief Scott's answers could provide clues to the identity of a rape victim. The Chronicle does not identify victims of sexual assault without their consent.

- Man Fatally Shot by Police at SFO After Telling Officers Gun Was Loaded, Instructed Them on Shooting
- Date posted
- Description
- In the moments before he died, the man fatally shot by police at San Francisco International Airport this month told police his gun was loaded and made statements instructing officers on how to shoot him, including “center mass” and “make sure you aim,” police officials said Monday.
Police negotiated with Nelson Szeto for several minutes, ordering him to put down his gun — what police believed was a firearm turned out to be an airsoft toy gun stripped of the orange markings that indicate it is not a real firearm. But the 37-year-old did not comply, and police twice deployed rounds of foam projectiles before the man raised his arm with the gun, prompting four officers to fire their weapons at him, police said.

Laurie didn’t know much about her daughter’s life now, but she knew she was homeless in the Tenderloin and addicted to fentanyl and had escaped death from overdosing many times with a lucky shot of Narcan. And she knew she couldn’t lose another child to drug addiction.
Laurie dreamed of leaving San Francisco with Jessica in the passenger seat, ready to enter long-term residential drug treatment and start a healthy new life. But she didn’t know what she was up against.

At age 43, she would confront not only the loss of her partner, but her belief that the VTA and the federal government had failed to protect him.
Nearly six months after the VTA gunman killed nine colleagues and himself in a warehouse at the rail yard, the attention has faded. Most friends have stopped calling to check in. Terra and the couple’s children are left figuring out how to move forward without Alex. While many people touched by firearm violence become advocates for gun control, Terra is more interested in making it easier for families to get the resources they need after tragedy strikes.

- Chronically Homeless, Addiction and Mental Health Issues Intensified Problems | The Homeless Project

- Description
- Gwyn Teninty, 53, is one of Oakland’s chronically homeless people — the one-fifth of the unhoused population having lived outside for more than a year with severe mental health, addiction or physical disabilities.
Teninty spent most of the past three years living alongside Interstate 580 on Santa Clara Avenue, under tarps strung between her inoperable vehicle and a fence. “I miss having a place to sleep where I don’t have to worry about what’s coming. I miss having walls. I miss being sober,” said Teninty.

- Aging into Homelessness, an Eviction Kept Her From Affordable Housing | The Homeless Project
- Date posted

- Description
- Delbra Taylor, 70, lives in a Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer at a city site set up for seniors and medically vulnerable people as extra shelter during the coronavirus crisis.
This wasn’t how Taylor envisioned her golden years. When she bought a three-bedroom mobile home in Hayward in 2013, she thought she was set. It was her first time buying, after years of renting in Oakland. But within a year, Taylor lost the home she’d bought for nearly $135,000 when she was evicted from her mobile home park.

- He's Homeless and Running for Mayor. Here's Why | The Homeless Project

- Description
- Derrick Soo, 61, lives in a tarp-and-wood-beam structure on 77th Avenue in Oakland. He has been living on the street since March 2014.
With rent far out of reach today on his $1,041 monthly disability check, Soo spends most of his time advocating for new approaches to homelessness as part of a grassroots campaign for mayor of Oakland. Rather than doubling down on the city’s current system of shelters and temporary cabins, Soo argues for dignified and durable long-term tiny homes on community-owned land with space for cooking, showers and keeping belongings safe.

- You Can't Be Buried in San Francisco. The Bodies Are in Colma. Here's a Cypress Lawn Cemetery Tour
- Date posted
- Description
- When San Francisco decided it wasn't going to hold buried people anymore, they moved them all to Colma, which is now known for having 17 cemeteries and about 1500 times more deceased people than living.
In the first Halloween episode for Total SF, hosts Heather Knight and Peter Hartlaub meet with Terry Hamburg, director of the Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation, for a tour of some of the Colma-based memorial park's most memorable graves.
They visit Chronicle founders Charles and Michael de Young to get some of The Chronicle's gun-toting history, and talk about a decapitated cemetery resident and Hell's Angels funerals. Plus, they pay respects to Willie McCovey and Lefty O'Doul. (Who really needs to be in the Hall of Fame.)
Hamburg says people are welcome to stroll through the Cypress Lawn cemeteries, which encouraged visitors — including pets — to visit their open space during the pandemic.

- Could A Conservatorship Have Saved the Life of This Struggling Veteran?
- Date posted
- Description
- For five years, Alexandra Siliezar tried to keep her older brother alive.
Abraham, an insatiable reader and adoring uncle, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in the Marines, turning to alcohol to escape. And when the San Francisco resident sustained a brain injury in a street attack in 2015, he developed dementia and seizures.
The siblings spoke almost every day, Alexandra reminding Abraham to eat or to take his medicine. They sat together at church in the Mission. They celebrated holidays at Alexandra’s home, where he would squeeze her daughter in bear hugs. Their phone calls ended with “I love you.”
Alexandra believed her brother couldn’t care for himself. So she asked his doctors to evaluate his mental capacity. She needed a specific document to ask a judge to appoint her as his conservator, giving her the power to make medical decisions for him even if he was resistant. She believed he didn’t understand how si...
