- Date posted

- Description
- In Seemanchal, Bihar’s poorest region, voters in nearly every village have lost their vote without any basis as part of the special intensive revision of voter lists. They are not dead, absent, enrolled in multiple places, nor have they migrated. And yet, the Election Commission’s hastily conducted exercise has cut them out of the democratic process right before the state elections.
In Belka village in Amour constituency, the revision cut out nearly 20% of the electorate. However, many of those deleted here had submitted their forms to their BLOs within the stipulated time. Yet, there names were deleted.

- Description
- An estimated 3,000 people marched through London to protest against US President Donald Trump’s historic second state visit.
Britain is pulling out all the stops to dazzle and flatter the unpredictable Trump as the UK government tries to keep him onside during a host of international crises. The 79-year-old Republican is, however, being kept far away from Britons as polls indicate he remains unpopular with the public, with the entire visit happening behind closed doors.

- Global matcha 'obsession' drinks Japan tea farms dry
- Date posted
- Description
- Matcha has been taking the world by storm, but Japanese producers are struggling to keep up with soaring demand for the powdered green tea.
Producing the powder is an intensive process: the leaves, called "tencha," are shaded for several weeks before harvest, to concentrate the taste and nutrients. They are then carefully deveined by hand, dried and finely ground in a machine.
Japan's government is encouraging tea producers to farm on a larger scale but that risks sacrificing quality. The number of tea plantations in Japan has also fallen to a quarter of what it was 20 years ago, as farmers age and struggle to secure successors.

- In this 30th episode of Yeh Dagh Dagh Ujala, Author and peace activist Harsh Mander speaks to lawyer Mihir Desai and author Subash Gatade, diving deeper into the acquittal of seven individuals-including former MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt. Col Prasad Purohit- in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. After 17 years, the verdict delivered by the NIA court, cited the glaring absence of ‘reliable and cogent evidence’ and cleared all seven accused.
Renowned Human Rights Lawyer, Mihir Desai, highlights many loopholes in the investigation including disappearance of statements (before magistrate), the pressure exerted on the prosecution itself, including allegations by former public prosecutor Rohini Salian that she was urged by senior NIA officials to “go soft” on the accused, inconsistent witness testimonies and tampering of evidence as well as the blast site.

- Bangladeshi or Indian? A Scroll Investigation

- Description
- The crackdown began while India was still locked in a conflict with Pakistan. Starting May, across several states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the police began a hunt for undocumented migrants from Bangladesh. Thousands of Bengali-speaking workers were rounded up and questioned. Hundreds were quietly flown to the border and pushed into Bangladesh.
Among them were Mehebub Sheikh, a mason working in Mumbai, Amir Sekh, a construction worker toiling in Rajasthan, and Sunali Khatun, a domestic worker living in Delhi.
As videos surfaced from Bangladesh, showing them stranded across the border, their families in West Bengal raised an outcry. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Modi government of unleashing an attack on Bengalis.
But are Mehebub, Amir and Sunali actually Indian citizens wrongly deported to Bangladesh?
We travelled to their villages to find out. Watch our special investigation.

- ‘Why was my name deleted?’ | Meet Bihar's excluded voters | Part 1 | On the Ground
In part one of this three-part series, we travel to Ansari tola, a village where 22% of the voters have been deleted.

Scroll Adda Episode #7
Varun Grover describes himself as an anti-establishment artist. And as a writer, filmmaker and comedian, he has carved a distinct voice for himself in these politically charged times.
Of course, none of this is easy. Never in its history as an independent country has India seen this level of censorship. The threat of violence always hangs over the head of dissenting artists. Grover describes this as “having a drunk father – one day he might come back and love you but then another he might beat you for no reason”.
In Scroll Adda’s first-ever live audience recording, Shoaib Daniyal speaks to Grover to understand how a middle-class Punjabi kid from Lucknow managed to use his engineering degree as a springboard into Bombay.

Tonnes of trash -- from empty cans and gas canisters, to bottles, plastic and discarded climbing gear -- have earned once-pristine Everest the grim nickname of the "highest dumpster in the world".

- Wrongly Deported, Now Brought Back
- Date posted

- Description
- Amir Sk showed Rajasthan Police his Aadhaar card and his birth certificate, both of which stated he was from Malda, West Bengal. But the police wanted the 19-year-old construction worker to furnish his voter card. Amir did not have one. Not eligible to vote until last year, he had not bothered obtaining it.
The police took him into custody, keeping him in jail for a few days, before putting him on a flight to Kolkata. From there, he was taken to the border with Bangladesh and forced to cross over – a fate similar to thousands of others expelled by Indian authorities on suspicion that they were illegal immigrants.
Back home, Amir’s distraught family moved Calcutta High Court. A day before a crucial court hearing, Amir’s uncle got a phone call from the Border Security Force.

- Description
- In this episode of Yeh Daagh daagh Ujala, Human Rights activist, Harsh Mander is joined by Mohsin Alam Bhat, Assistant Professor of Law, HRA Choudhary, Lawyer at Guwahati High Court and Arshad Ahmed, an independent journalist.
Mohsin Alam Bhat talks about his report 'Unmaking Citizens: The Architecture of Rights Violation and Exclusion in India’s Citizenship Trials.' The report examines how Assam’s citizenship verification regime—centred on the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) and upheld by the Gauhati High Court—systematically undermines the rule of law and basic human rights. It shows how nearly 166,000 people have already been declared “foreigners,” with over 85,000 cases still pending, often based on minor documentary errors, missed notices, or customary practices like women’s name changes after marriage. The system reverses the burden of proof, forcing largely poor and marginalised groups, especially Miya Muslims, to prove their citizenship through documents ...
