- Louvre museum closed after jewels heist
- Date posted
- Description
- Police are searching for a band of thieves who stole eight priceless royal pieces of jewellery from the Louvre Museum in the heart of Paris in broad daylight on 19 October.
They used a truck with an extendable ladder like those used by movers to get access to the Apollo Gallery, home to the royal collection, and cutting equipment to get in through a window and open the display cases.
The masked thieves stole nine 19th-century items of jewellery, one of which, the crown of the Empress Eugenie, they dropped and damaged as they made their escape.
The heist has reignited a row over a lack of security in France's museums, with Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin admitting to security flaws in protecting the Louvre.

- 'It's like our Kumbh Mela': Jharkhand Adivasis fighting for their sacred groves
- Date posted
- Description
- “Just as the Kumbh mela in Uttar Pradesh is sacred to Hindus, this is one of the most revered sites for Adivasis in Jharkhand,” said a protestor, standing a few feet away from the sacred grove at Siram Toli in Ranchi.
She was among those protesting against the construction of a flyover ramp near the Siram Toli sacred grove earlier this year.
Traditionally, every Adivasi village in Jharkhand had a patch of forested land on the outskirts, which the community conserved and used for various rituals and prayers. Known as sarna sthals, these sacred groves are symbols of the community’s deep ties with the environment. But they are fast disappearing under the pressure of rapid urbanisation.
We travelled to two such threatened sites and spoke to members of the Adivasi community about their connection to the sacred groves and how they are seeking to protect them.

India has, in theory, a cabinet system of government. A group of popularly elected politicians are meant to rule using consensus. In practice, of course, we have a strongman (or strongwoman) model, where one powerful politician rules via a clique of Indian Administrative Service officers.
So much do politicians like the IAS that since independence, they have given the cadre more and more power. This when, during the Raj itself, babus were already seen to be all-powerful. What happens, though, when an IAS officer decides to listen to his...

- After reporting on allegations of voter suppression in the Kundarki bye-election from the ground last year, Scroll has followed it up with a data investigation that puts question marks on the integrity of that election.
The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the bye-poll in this Muslim-dominant constituency with an unprecedented margin.
We poured over official Election Commission data for months and found targeted revision of voter lists in the run-up to the bye-poll and unusual voting patterns on polling day.
These patterns – absent during the Lok Sabha elections held six months before the bye-poll – mirror claims of electoral manipulation made by Muslim voters.

- Date posted

- Description
- Former president Nicolas Sarkozy is set to become France's first postwar leader to go to prison after a court jailed him for five years over a scheme for the late Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi to fund his victorious 2007 presidential run.
The court convicted him on charges of criminal conspiracy, although it acquitted him of corruption and personally accepting illegal campaign financing.
The court ordered that Sarkozy should be placed in custody at a later date, with prosecutors given one month to inform the former head of state when he should go to prison.
