- Does Mamata, Stalin's defeat signal the endgame for opposition INDIA alliance?
- Date posted
- Description
- This week saw five state election results being declared. The outcomes will significantly determine Indian politics over the next few years and eventually shape the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
To unpack this, Shoaib Daniyal speaks with Sanjay Kumar, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, whose post-election survey data has set a benchmark for psephology in India.
Kumar explains why the TVK managed to attract an astonishing number of voters in Tamil Nadu. Why Mamata Banerjee's woman and minority-dominated vote could not contain the BJP. What this means for the opposition INDIA alliance and why the BJP's belligerance belies the fact that it is actually running a coalition government.

- Why Hindutva loves to hate Romila Thapar | Scroll Adda
- Date posted
- Description
- Very few things are as controversial in today’s India as its history. The academic discipline now sits at the heart of popular politics, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and its Hindutva supporters using India’s medieval past to power its politics.
Into this battlefield rush in writer Namit Arora and India’s most famous historian, Romila Thapar. In their new book “Speaking of History”, Thapar and Arora deconstruct what the discipline means in India today, the role of popular history and why ideas such as perpetual Hindu-Muslim conflict say more about the present than the past.
In this episode of Scroll Adda, Thapar opens up about what it has been like being attacked by the Hindutva right for so long and why she thinks academic history will, eventually, prevail over short-term politics.

- How Assam's political map was changed to BJP's advantage l True Story
- Date posted
- Description
- Gerrymandering is the act of redrawing the boundaries of political constituencies in a way that gives the ruling party a clear advantage over its rivals. The term, which originated in the United States, entered mainstream political discourse in India last week when the Modi government convened a special session of Parliament to push for early delimitation in the name of implementing women’s reservation.
The bills were defeated. But the threat of gerrymandering is real, as we know from the case of Assam.
The state saw a delimitation exercise in 2023 which altered political boundaries in a way that led to absurd outcomes: one panchayat, for instance, is now represented by two MPs and three MLAs.
The larger impact was that Muslim representation in the state shrunk with the Bharatiya Janata Party acquiring a permanent edge over its rivals.

- Description
- In 1976, Indira Gandhi froze the numbers of Parliamentary seats each state had. The argument was simple: states doing well when it came to family planning should not have to suffer by having their representation in Parliament reduced.
But the Modi government now seeks to end this freeze with a new set of bills. And it wants it to be done urgently: a special session of Parliament will convene on Thursday to try and pass these laws.
To understand why the South is opposing this, Scroll speaks to John Brittas, Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala.

- Has Pakistan pulled off a diplomatic coup of sorts?
Islamabad has emerged as a key mediator that has got the US and Iran to declare a ceasefire and talk to each other for the first time since the Islamic Revolution.
While the talks have for now been called off, with the US saying it will navally blockade Iran, does the summit in Islamabad itself mean a shot in the arm for Pakistan’s global image?
To break this down, we interview political scientist and Pakistan expert Dr Christine Fair.

- Why Indians have stopped reading | Scroll Adda

- Description
- Few people know more about Indian publishing than Scroll's books editor, Arunava Sinha.
Sinha has translated an incredible 100 books from Bengali to English. On this episode of Scroll Adda, he tells Shoaib Daniyal about his experience as a translator and what it takes to render a work from one language – and culture – to another.
He also delves into the weeds of Indian publishing. Why are Indians not reading anymore? Is English eating up the space for other Indian languages? Why do publishers now chase influencers to write books? Is the space for serious literature now dead?

The 79-year-old ramped up his apocalyptic rhetoric over the Easter weekend in a bid to push Iran into agreeing to a ceasefire deal in the Middle East war. The language used by Trump led former close allies to call for the 79-year-old Republican's removal from office.
