Singh borrowed money from his family, even took up a part-time job in the city to play the online money game. But over 4-5 years, he lost Rs 8 lakh-Rs 10 lakh, he said.
According to the government, 45 crore Indians were “negatively affected by online money games and faced a loss of more than Rs 20,000 crores”. Citing these numbers, the government banned online money games through a new legislation in August 2025.
The ban, which extends to games like poker, typically played by more affluent users, came into effect this week.

The Indian state is an almost mythical animal. Inherited by Indians from the British Raj, the state is responsible for great injustice: Indians are generally more scared of the police than they are of goondas. Nearly every Indian also thinks the state is corrupt: bureaucrats and politicians are out to fleece them.
But paradoxically, Indians also look to the state for help and as a beacon to building a better society. Welfare and its contours are a feature of every election cycle. Moreover, backward castes have bat...

The court ordered that Sarkozy should be placed in custody at a later date, with prosecutors given one month to inform the former head of state when he should go to prison.

- Runtime

- Description
- Matcha has been taking the world by storm, but Japanese producers are struggling to keep up with soaring demand for the powdered green tea.
Producing the powder is an intensive process: the leaves, called "tencha," are shaded for several weeks before harvest, to concentrate the taste and nutrients. They are then carefully deveined by hand, dried and finely ground in a machine.
Japan's government is encouraging tea producers to farm on a larger scale but that risks sacrificing quality. The number of tea plantations in Japan has also fallen to a quarter of what it was 20 years ago, as farmers age and struggle to secure successors.

- Description
- The crackdown began while India was still locked in a conflict with Pakistan. Starting May, across several states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the police began a hunt for undocumented migrants from Bangladesh. Thousands of Bengali-speaking workers were rounded up and questioned. Hundreds were quietly flown to the border and pushed into Bangladesh.
Among them were Mehebub Sheikh, a mason working in Mumbai, Amir Sekh, a construction worker toiling in Rajasthan, and Sunali Khatun, a domestic worker living in Delhi.
As videos surfaced from Bangladesh, showing them stranded across the border, their families in West Bengal raised an outcry. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Modi government of unleashing an attack on Bengalis.
But are Mehebub, Amir and Sunali actually Indian citizens wrongly deported to Bangladesh?
We travelled to their villages to find out. Watch our special investigation.

- Description
- In Seemanchal, Bihar’s poorest region, voters in nearly every village have lost their vote without any basis as part of the special intensive revision of voter lists. They are not dead, absent, enrolled in multiple places, nor have they migrated. And yet, the Election Commission’s hastily conducted exercise has cut them out of the democratic process right before the state elections.
In Bajraha village in Dhamdaha constituency, the revision cut out 408 voters from it – a deletion rate of 33%. These include many young men from the village’s Musahar hamlet, a settlement of Dalits, who have lost their vote because they are working in Punjab and could not send their paperwork in time.
