The designer last year earned himself a Master’s degree in collection design, even though prior to that, he never got career guidance and he had no role models to look up to at an early age, which is why he pursued other fields before realising what he was good at all along.

- He is known as one of the pioneers of Rwanda’s budding film industry and at one time, Hillywood, Rwanda’s version of Hollywood or Nigeria’s Nollywood, was touted as one of the most promising motion picture industries.
Twenty-eight years down the road, Rwanda’s film industry has grown by leaps and bounds for some while for others, it is stagnant. Nobody knows the story of Rwanda’s motion picture industry more than Eric Kabera.
For almost three decades now, Kabera has been the face of Rwanda’s film industry, almost seen as a father figure. The founder of Kwetu Film Institute and Rwanda Film Festival (RFF), a brainchild of Rwanda Cinema Centre, has been at the forefront of the movie industry in Rwanda.
A filmmaker himself, Kabera was able to carry Rwanda’s Hillywood story to Hollywood and in doing so, brought Hollywood to Rwanda. Rwanda’s post-Genocide movie industry blossomed at the time.

- Description
- For Imigongo, the design is traced back in the 18th century, in the Gisaka Kingdom – part of the present-day Eastern Province – during the reign of Kimenyi Getura, whose son Kakira was known to be unusually clean and neat.
Prince Kakira is also known to have been creative with his hands, to design among other things, imigongo.
He conceptualised many designs in one of his father’s houses which he later converted as the reception area for high-level guests to his court.
The practice then became common, but initially among high ranking officials, until the rest of Rwandans adopted the culture. Now, it is still done and in many different ways.
Fashion and graphic designers have made it easier for anyone to not only have Imigongo frames hang in their houses, but also wear these designs, such as made in Rwanda haute couture worn by high end customers, although even those with limited means can rock the design.

- Description
- Awoke Ogbo, a university graduate in Global Challenges at Africa Leadership University based in Rwanda is preserving the environment by recycling plastic bottles into bricks and pavers.
The idea is in line with Rwanda’s decision to ensure a sustainable environment since the government commenced elimination of use of single use plastics in 2019. However, PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles are still used due to a shortage of alternatives, with the investors urged to intervene in their sustainable management.
Awoke, who focused on education and infrastructure in university, says Operation 414 is a social enterprise idea that will create roads and pathways that are more eco-friendly and affordable for the Rwandan community in a way that will encourage community building in the places they will develop with the use of those bricks.
