- Therapist Mudahogora on why Rwandans should be more open about mental health

- Description
- For someone who lived through years of trauma and observing the stigma around mental health conditions, which is common in Rwandan and most African societies, sitting back and doing nothing about it was not an option.
Having moved to Canada two decades ago, and furthering her education in psychotherapy there, Chantal Mudahogora understands well the rigours of struggling with mental health conditions and even worse when you live in a society that does not recognise the serious nature of these conditions.
Indeed, when Mudahogora moved to the North American country 20 years ago, even the experience and education she had from Rwanda was not recognised, meaning that she had to take up new courses to get the ‘Canadian experience’ before she could practice.
That is how serious some countries take mental health issues. Before she left Rwanda, she had a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and had worked with a government ministry as well...

- Growing up in rural settings with a talent but limited exposure can definitely impact one’s ability to hone that gift to reality. Very often it takes passion and the drive to bring that talent to life or risk wasting it.
Born and raised in Gisenyi, Rubavu district, Claude Nizeyimana knew deep down he loved art as a child. Not even limited exposure could get in his way. The only place he interacted with art was in church.
The 25-year-old says he was obsessed by art pieces and sculptures in and around church, particularly the Roman Catholic Church. The more he looked at them, the more he was mesmerised by the beauty of art. It tickled his brain.

- Leaders, particularly in politics, are often viewed in a limited manner that confines them to their professional roles. This is why any deviation from the expected behaviour is often made a spectacle of.
Things like former US President Obama’s seasonal playlists that are a far cry from typical everyday politics have not only coloured outside the lines, but also instigated the notion that there is a personality beyond the influential public figures, and expressing that side of oneself is arguably one of the best ways to connect with people.
Setting out to explore this unconventional style of conversation with public figures in Rwanda was a debatable decision because of how reserved they always seem to be, but the exclusive interview The New Times had with veteran politician Tito Rutaremara amplified the narrative that there is a personality behind the suit.

- The U16 Afrobasket tournament that took place in Monastir, Tunisia, in July, showcased a number of young basketball talents.
One of them is Kenrik Kabano, a US-based shooting guard whose smooth handling of the ball, shooting instinct and game intelligence were a beauty to watch.
If you followed the competition, you must have noticed the young guard donning shirt 13 who starred with a game high 21 points against Egypt in the quarterfinals, despite Rwanda losing to the North Africans.
Born in Ohio, United States, in 2008, Kabano saw the 2023 U16 Afrobasket as his first ever national team duty, and he can barely hide his excitement back to the time he was handed a debut call up in early July to represent Rwanda at such a big stage.

- Description
- Approximately two years since his return to Rwanda, Inki has already created space for his craft and tastes in the Rwandan music scene. Resetting, for him, meant returning to Rwanda, and making music for his people.
His hit song ‘Miriyoni’ articulates exactly what you can expect from his music, which is a mix of afro pop and RNB with a subtle twist of Gakondo to the sound, making it unique. His journey to that point, however, was no bed of roses.
One of the things he struggled with was adjusting to the social dynamics in Rwanda, especially because of how different they had been from what he was used to.
The many friends he had made overtime and his now wife however, helped him navigate it, and eventually he found his way around.

- In Africa, switching from a rural to urban setting most likely comes with socioeconomic challenges, among other trials, unless one already has a source of income or the funds to settle in.
It can be completely life-changing given the differences between rural and urban areas; some people fail to keep up with life in cities or towns and end up going back to their villages.
It can be even more problematic to move from a rural area to a city as an adult, with no formal education and children to take care of.
Such is the case of 58-year-old Marie Goretti Uzabakiriho and her husband who took a leap of faith to move from Huye to Kigali, with their children, to start life in the city—a move that came with many challenges.
