- A driver was killed after crashing a semi-truck into a bridge pillar on the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near Sylmar, prompting multiple lanes in the area to be closed early Thursday morning.
The crash occurred near the 5 Freeway at the 210 Freeway shortly before midnight on Wednesday.
The semi-truck was carrying grapes and was in the truck route when it drifted to the left, striking a bridge pillar, Sgt. Jonathan Yochim of the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP said the driver died at the scene, while another person trapped inside the truck was transported.

- Redlands Fire Department responded to a vehicle vs a structure. Arriving crews located a white hatchback crashed into the garage of a house. The driver of the hatchback took down a gas line that caught fire. The fire was threatening the home and residents were evacuated while attempts were made to shut down the gas. A tow truck removed the vehicle from the wall of the home and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames. The driver of the hatchback was treated on site for minor injuries.

Arriving authorities found a white SUV that had crashed into the building the driver was evaluated and transported to the hospital with what were described as possible minor injuries. - Two women and a horse who became stuck in mud near Hanson Dam in the Shadow Hills area of Los Angeles were freed by firefighters.
Crews responded to a call of a horse and rider stranded off the 10800 block of Wentworth Street about 6 p.m. and upon arrival found the horse stuck deep in the mud, but the female rider was safe and uninjured, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A fire department Urban Search and Rescue team was dispatched to the scene and used specialized equipment to successfully free the horse from the mud about 7:30 p.m., Prange said. While crews were working to free the horse, a second woman became stuck in mud a few hundred yards away, he said. ``A portion of the rescue team redirected their efforts and coordinated the rescue of the second patient,'' Prange said.
Neither woman was injured and a veterinarian was contacted to examine the horse.

- Two adult brothers were killed and two people were being sought after a violent hit-and-run in a residential neighborhood in Highland Park.
Witnesses told police that a white Chevy Silverado pickup truck reached speeds of more than 80 mph before it slammed into a white Ford Fusion sedan about 1:10 a.m. in the 700 block of North San Pascual Avenue. Several parked cars were also struck.
The two men inside the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified by loved ones as 19-year-old Jesse Felix Zuniga and his brother, 25-year-old Ben Felix Zuniga.

- A 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman died when the Lamborghini they were riding in crashed into an SUV, then struck a tree and caught fire near the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in Encino.
The crash occurred at Burbank Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue around 7:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. One victim was identified as 19-year-old Luiza Vaagnovna Karakhanyan. The second person was identified later Thursday as Joel David White, 25, of Long Beach.
The sports car was eastbound on Burbank Boulevard at speeds over 100 mph when it struck an SUV, then slammed into a tree and caught fire, police said. The driver and passenger died at the scene.

- A quiet Sierra Madre neighborhood is still reeling Wednesday after a homeless man was attacked by a bear in a nearby campground.
Residents called 911 at about 11:30 p.m. to report an elderly man they didn’t know running around and ringing doorbells in the 1200 block of Arno Drive. When police officers arrived, they found the 84-year-old man had severe injuries to his head and arm.
The man, who identified himself as John, told police he was in a sleeping bag in the Chantry Flats area when a 200- to 300-pound bear attacked him, clawing his face and arm. He was able to get away and run for help on Arno Drive.
John, who said he has lived in the hills for more than a decade, told police he had seen an animal like that in the area before, but never had an encounter like this.
The man declined hospitalization despite suffering deep cuts. However, authorities did get DNA samples from his clothes and sleeping bag.

- A homeowner called Pasadena police around 4:30 p.m.. to report the animal on the 1600 block of N. Lake Avenue near Washington Blvd., according to Pasadena Fire spokeswoman Lisa Dederian.
The mountain lion was believed to be as large as 80 to 100 pounds, Dederian said.
A short time later, a resident on the 1500 block called police and said the cat was napping under a tree.
Fish and Wildlife officers responded to the scene and the mountain lion was captured and taken to a vet for examination.

- A 21-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were rescued today from fast-moving water in the Pacoima Wash, a tributary of the Los Angeles River, authorities said.
The two entered the wash near Foothill Boulevard and were swept miles down the wash at about 20 mph, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said.
One of them managed to call 911 at about 12:30 a.m. and spoke with dispatchers while moving through the wash, Prange said.
The pair grabbed a wall before passing under Telfair Avenue and
remained there until firefighters arrived, he said.
``LAFD quickly deployed their aerial ladder with a firefighter
dangling from a harness off of the end of the ladder,'' Prange said. ``Both patients were extricated from the river within 15 minutes of resources getting to the scene.''

Crews responded about 12:40 a.m. to a fourplex at 1745 and 1745 1/2 W. Gage Ave., near Western Avenue and found fire coming from two units of the one-story building, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A total of 55 firefighters were able to confine the fire to the two
units and knockdown was declared at 1 a.m., Humphrey said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under

Some neighbors were forced to evacuate and firefighters had to retreat when the house collapsed as they were pouring water on it.
It was unclear how long it took firefighters to extinguish the flames,
the dispatcher said.
No injuries were reported. Those evacuated returned home.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.

- A stolen vehicle pursuit ended with two drivers in custody after a civilian began chasing the suspect across the San Fernando Valley Monday night.
The driver was maneuvering dangerously around other motorists as he attempted to escape authorities, driving on the wrong side of the road and at one point colliding with another vehicle. The stolen car sustained visible damage to its front right side but was able to continue on.
Around 8:50 p.m., LAPD's ground units pulled off the chase, though authorities continued to monitor in aerial units.
That move was intended to create safer road conditions, but the stolen car soon crashed into a minivan in an intersection in the North Hills area. The sedan sustained further front-end damage, yet still continued on.
A spike strip was deployed around 9 p.m., but it did not appear to impede the suspect vehicle's progress. A short time later, it narrowly avoided a family in a crosswalk.

- The young female passengers jumped out of the car and ran away on foot then the driver jumped out, moved an advertising sign, reversed out and drove away. No one inside the store was injured. CHP took a report.
A customer that saw the crash managed to film a couple of girls running off and the driver attempting to move the sign out the way.

- The calls of a house on fire started coming in around 7.30pm and responding units reported an attached garage fully involved with fire. Before the arrival of LAFD the man ran from the house stating that his cat was inside. LAFD went to work attempting to put the blaze out and after a knockdown in 22 minutes the LAFD found the cat and handed it back to the elated owner.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. The driver was placed in custody for suspicion of DUI. No one in the store was injured. Firefighters began an aggressive offensive attack on the fire, attempting to prevent it from extending to a 1 story garage behind it along with houses nearby. Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the fire in about 15 minutes. No injuries are reported.
