The aim was to bring more restaurants, retailers, and commercial developers to the region. - South Texas College President Ricardo Solis has praised both faculty and students for the college’s success with its nursing programs. STC’s Associate Degree in Nursing Program leads the state of Texas with a 98.14% passing rate on the 2024 National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Preliminary results place STC ahead of both community colleges and universities statewide, including the University of Texas at Austin (92.38%) and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (92.14%). With the national NCLEX average at 88% in 2023, and the state average at 92%, STC’s performance significantly exceeds expectations, Solis said.

This is the view of Mike Willis, executive director of the South Texas Manufacturers Association. Willis says he bases his analysis on what RGV economic development leaders are telling him. President Trump is threatening to impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada. However, on Feb. 3, he said he will hold off from imposing tariffs on Mexican imports for a month following a productive telephone interview with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Trump wants Mexico to do more to reduce the flow of illegal drugs and undocumented migrants into the United States.

Her presentation, at the Radisson Hotel McAllen Airport, included a pre-recorded video featuring Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. In the video, Buckingham spoke about a 1,400-acre ranch in Starr County that she has offered to President Trump, should he wish to build mass deportation facilities.

Dr. Miller recently gave an interview to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service about the work her division does at the college, how TSC strives to meet the workforce needs of industry, and how the college reaches out to the community to make sure prospective students know what programs are on offer. Miller says trade certificates are in big demand today. She said that at the macro-level there has been a shift away from four-year university degree programs to the shorter trade related courses community colleges offer.

- Software developer and entrepreneur Steve Perez wants to see a far more robust logistics cluster established in the Brownsville/Matamoros area. To that end his company, Velox Global Solutions, has developed what Perez calls a "universal connector" for the data sets maquiladora companies need to show in order to cross finished goods and raw materials through international ports of entry. The product, to be called "Maquila Now," is set to launch in January, 2025. The Rio Grande Guardian International News Service caught up with Perez at the eBridge Center for Business & Commercialization in downtown Brownsville.
