- Caesars Palace turns 60: How the iconic Las Vegas resort changed the Strip forever
- Runtime
- 1:22
- Date posted
- Description
- Sixty years after opening its doors on the Strip, Caesars Palace hotel-casino is celebrating a milestone that few Las Vegas properties have reached while remaining one of the city’s defining destinations.
Opened Aug. 5, 1966, Caesars Palace was the vision of developer Jay Sarno, who helped introduce a new level of spectacle to the Las Vegas Strip.
“Caesars Palace was really the first luxury-themed hotel,” said Michael Green, an associate professor of history at UNLV. “Caesars has innovated and changed to keep up and sometimes lead the way in terms of how Las Vegas has changed.”
Over six decades, Caesars Palace has introduced or helped popularize ideas that became staples across the Strip. Green said the opening of The Forum Shops and the arrival of celebrity-chef restaurants helped shift Las Vegas from a place visitors primarily came to gamble into a broader entertainment destination.
Company executives say the resort contin...

- CTRL Room offers beginners ‘the feel of being a DJ’

- Description
- Just like the way karaoke won’t set you up for a residency on the Strip, The CTRL Room won’t land you a gig at a nightclub. At least not a reputable one.
“We are not a DJ academy, first and foremost,” says Chris Clark, owner of the DJ experience at 3345 E. Patrick Lane.
“We’re just teaching the basics,” he continues. “There’s a lot you can learn from us, but there’s still a lot to learn. We’re not going to tell you that you are a DJ right now, but we are going to say this is the feel of being a DJ.”
The first step: Attendees choose their DJ names.
The CTRL Room, which opened April 25, offers seven identical booths, each with its own Pioneer XDJ-RX3 controller and a 16-inch MacBook Pro running Serato DJ and Rekordbox.
“This is top-of-the-line DJ equipment that they use in the clubs right now,” Clark explains.
Each booth also comes with an iRig to connect your phone to record audio a...

- Description
- Oscar Goodman’s favorite editor is poring over his latest book, proofreading not just for grammar and punctuation, but for content and context.
“What’s more encouraging, every three seconds, I hear a giggle,” Goodman said Sunday afternoon as he celebrated his 87th birthday in Las Vegas.
Goodman’s next tome. The project has been 10 months in the making and is due for release in March. The Goodmans, of course, were mayors of Las Vegas for a quarter century, Oscar’s terms from 1999-2011 and Carolyn’s running from 2011-2024.
The book’s title and publisher are to be announced. But expect material that has not been filtered, as Goodman dives back into his “Mob Lawyer” era in Las Vegas.
“This will be a very humorous read. I am getting back into my relationships with clients, with (longtime Sheriff) Ralph Lamb,” Goodman said. “It’s a funny and also serious opportunity to tell everybody what I thought of the FBI’s...

- Description
- The Eagles’ stay at Sphere is a lot like a famous song lyric. They can check out any time they like. But they can never leave.
The rock legends are adding to their record-setting series at the Bulbous Wonder. Announced Tuesday morning are four dates Jan. 15-16 and Jan. 22-23 (tickets start at $175, with all-in pricing, and go on sale at 10 a.m. Pacific time Aug. 14).
With 10 dates already on the schedule in September, November and December, the “Take It Easy” hitmakers have extended the longest residency ever at Sphere with 72 dates.
Putting that number further out of reach of the Backstreet Boys (with 57 total dates through their final scheduled show Aug. 29) might not be the Eagles’ primary motive. But if this is a competition, the “Hotel California” inhabitants are winning.
Whatever the case, we can now table Don Henley’s statement to “CBS This Morning” in May that the band was likely to bow out this year.

- The show is free and so is the advice.
“I suggest people sit closer,” Dennis Lavender begins, smiling knowingly beneath a white fedora, his grin like lightning foreshadowing a thunderous punchline. “Because if you sit closer to the stage, when a comic’s joke doesn’t work, you get to see the failure in their eyes — it makes it even funnier.”
He chuckles, as if to lead by example.
“Hopefully someone makes you laugh,” Lavender suggests without sounding especially hopeful. “If you crack a smile, you got what you paid for.”
He pauses, waiting for the audience to remember there was no cover charged here at the Luv Lounge, an upscale hookah bar and restaurant.
“Think about that,” he urges, allowing time for the joke to hold, before trying again. “I’ll repeat myself.”
Lavender is an old hand at this by now, hosting weekly open mics in nontraditional comedic settings, which he’s been ...

- UNLV’s insurance degree program to combat aging industry’s ‘silver tsunami’

- Description
- The quickest way to clear a room full of people is to tell them that you work in the insurance industry.
“Because they think you’re going to try to sell them life insurance or something like that, when the reality is nothing could be further from the truth,” said Patrick Hanley, a former industry executive and current director of the UNLV Kerestesi Center for Insurance and Risk Management. “It’s easily the greatest industry you’ve never heard of.”
The perception of the insurance industry — and the younger generation’s hesitancy to join it — has led to what some have called the “silver tsunami,” an impending workforce crisis in which nearly half of the nation’s insurance professionals are expected to retire in the next 10 to 15 years.
The mass exodus from the industry — in which less than 25 percent of professionals are under the age of 35 — is projected to produce a gap of about 400,000 jobs.
