President of The Bahamas Educators Managerial Union (BEMU), Stephen McPhee, says there’s been progress following meetings with the government over the last week. According to McPhee, promotion letters were sent to the Ministry of Education and are now being prepared for distribution.
The Union represents public school administrators, principals, vice principals, senior individuals, and education officers within the public school system.
The BEMU chief also said the Union met with the Labour Relations Unit and Ministry of Education on Tuesday to discuss a new industrial agreement. While the icy relationship between BEMU and the Davis administration has thawed, McPhee made it clear that “the work is not done” as they move into critical financial discussions.

A hardship allowance has also been finalized for Family Island teachers who were required to relocate, with payments of $2,500 for teachers on southern islands and $1,800 for those on northern islands.
Wilson said all outstanding financial matters have now been addressed and signed off.
The announcement follows months of stalled negotiations between the government and the B.U.T.
The five-year agreement covers 2025 to 2030 and is retroactive to July 1, 2025.

They recalled Wisdom’s passion for mentoring young people, his lifelong commitment to the Progressive Liberal Party, and the countless conversations he had about making the country better. Above all, they said that he was a loyal friend and a devoted family man whose impact will never be forgotten.
Wisdom died this morning at the age of 76.

Wilson also said she’s in communication with the government’s lead negotiator to request a meeting with Prime Minister Philip Davis and Minister of Finance Michael Halkitis.
The industrial action is looming over stalled negotiations on a new industrial agreement. Those talks have dragged on since November. The union is demanding a 20% salary increase over three years, but says the government has repeatedly returned with a salary package the union had already rejected.
