- On a daily basis, academic studies, reports and news tell us that the Earth’s ecosystem is in danger. But are schools doing enough to help raise awareness about climate change? OECD PISA test results show that schools play a central role in educating kids about environmental issues.
In 2018, about 90 percent of school principals across the OECD reported that climate change and global warming were covered in the school curriculum. However, Matthew Pye, a philosophy teacher and founder of
The Climate Academy, argues that schools and teachers need to be doing much more. In this episode of Top Class, he tells the OECD’s Duncan Crawford that schools should have a far greater focus on climate education.

- As artificial intelligence integrates into the world of education, how can we ensure it supports effective learning in the classroom? AI learning bots and other AI tools are increasingly being used by students and teachers, but not every agrees this is a good thing. While supporters champion AI as a transformative force that improves personalised learning and efficiency, sceptics are concerned about the erosion of critical thinking skills, the potential for algorithmic biases and privacy issues. In this episode of Top Class, Adeel Khan, Founder of MagicSchool AI, and Associate Professor at University College London, Wayne Holmes, speak to OECD Editor Duncan Crawford about the potential benefits and risks of AI, and the balance between technological progress and educational integrity.

- Young entrepreneurs have a huge role to play as slow productivity growth, climate change, demographic change and the digital transition come together in a perfect storm for many economies. The new OECD-EU “Missing Entrepreneurs” report finds that if youth (18-29 years old) participated in early-stage entrepreneurship at the same rate as “core age” men (30-49 years old), there would be an additional 3.6 million “missing youth entrepreneurs” in OECD countries. This accounts for about 11% of the total number of “missing entrepreneurs” in the OECD as young people face a range of barriers to success. David Halabisky from the OECD and Anita Tiessen, the CEO of Youth Business International, unwrap issues around money, mindset and motivation for young people in the world of business.

Today, organisations should actively engage with future trends, leveraging diverse networks for wider perspectives and incorporate them into corporate planning. Leaders need to act as sponsors, stewards and protectors to shield their teams from excessive criticism, bearing in mind that foresight is seldom easily understood by mainstream parts of an organisation. Foresight practitioners should be entrepreneurial by showcasing the importance of foresight and tapping into current trends. Central to this approach is the management of polarities, which includes striking a balance between future-oriented perspectives and present-day realities. Utilising immersive approaches, as well as tapping into the role of innovators and early adopters is essential for optimising the organisational impact of possible futures while the integration of both qualitative and quantitative data is vital.

This means being able to distinguish and use what Stuart Candy posits as the three dimensions of foresight – difference (which is basic to thinking about change over time), diversity (essential to all scenario generation processes and to the field’s core philosophical shift from “future” singular to “futures” plural), and depth (often neglected in the field, but now addressed by the family of approaches known as Experiential Futures, or XF). XF practices are about providing immersive, interactive, embodied and emotionally engaging glimpses of alternative futures through design, media and the arts: whatever it takes. Western democracy is challenged by a crisis of public confidence owing to a number of factors - historical, ideological, and social - making for profound discontent and readiness to embrace radical alternatives. Beyond this ongoing crisis in the present, there is a second wave of even more profound challenges, owing in large part to the unatnticipated consequences of morally detached technollogies, including nuclear energy, carbon-based energy, artificial biology, and suddenly, the birth of artificial intelligence. Individually, these are nearly - but not yet completely - beyond control. A general breakdown into a chaotic condition is possible, but not inevitable. Avoiding that requires a revived social contract between leaders and people, based essentially on new awareness of the issues, an apolitical dialogue over responses, and ways to buttress public support for democ...

Today, there is a significant need for organisations to proactively prepare for the future. Strategic foresight can act as an effective tool for organisations to navigate these future uncertainties and combat complex societal challenges. In this context, organisations should prioritise the understanding of the casual dynamics of unpredictable environments over traditional frameworks and foster collaborative responses to global challenges. The current strategies of organisations give disproportionate emphasis on reactive crisis management when they should focus instead on forward looking strategies. Organisations should integrate foresight with strategy and cultivate adaptable and forward looking frameworks that can truly address deep-routed challenges. At the same time, educati...

Scenario planning can play a crucial role in governmental and organisational contexts but only if the user and purpose of doing it are defined explicitly. It is dynamic in nature, evolving in response to shifting context and can address imminent challenges and shape strategic decisions effectively. Central to this approach, ‘’Strategy Reframing’’ is one of the essential steps for effective foresight and a key methodology to combat misleading prejudgments and failed strategies that can lead to inaccurate predictions. Strategic reframing enhances decision making by immersing stakeholders into future-scenarios which challenge deep pre-conceived assumptions and provide a structured approach to address future uncertainties. When designing scenarios, a holistic vision is required, recognizing the differences between the narrow and immediate perspective and the broader contextual envi...

Official development assistance or what is commonly known as ODA is financial aid that countries give to developing ones to improve their welfare and economic development.
When we talk about ODA eligibility, we can be referring to the eligibility of either the recipient country or the project:
A country or territory is eligible to receive this ODA if it is considered low or middle income according to a set of fixed criteria.
Eligible countries can be seen on a list that we maintain at the OECD and that donors use to disburse ODA.
A project is eligible to be counted as ODA under certain conditions.
In some areas, such as funds to support refugees or peace and security related activities, strict rules apply and donors have to follow them when reporting their ODA.

Education, employment, and leadership gaps are narrowing in most OECD countries, but structural barriers such as discriminatory social norms remain. Closing gender gaps at work could result in an average boost of 9.2% to GDP across OECD countries by 2060.
The OECD works to drive this progress through mainstreaming gender equality into its analysis. It provides country-specific analysis in order to transform harmful social norms and eliminate discriminatory laws.
The OECD monitors policy developments in OECD countries and beyond. The Organisation is deepening its partnerships to advance gender equality globally, including an inaugural Forum on Gender Equality in June 2024, to empower women and girls in th...

- Description
- Corruption entails costs that no country can afford. Serious harm results when public officials take bribes to award business contracts, for example, in areas such as road construction, water infrastructure, medicines or electricity – derailing the functioning of markets and undermining economic development.
This year we mark the 25th anniversary of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention which combats corruption by criminalising the bribery of foreign public officials in international business transactions.

- Description

- How can we make the care economy work in Southeast Asia? | Hyeshin Park

- Speaker: Hyeshin Park
Southeast Asia is on the brink of a major demographic transformation: fertility rates are going down, people are getting older, and as a result the demand for care services will explode in the coming years.
Today, it’s almost always women who provide those services for free at home. Tomorrow, asking women to do more is simply not going to work because the demand for such care services will be huge.
The solution is building strong, formal care sectors; with trained and certified professionals, and with facilities like daycare centres and nursing homes.
This is a big challenge: building a formal care economy demands investment and training. More fundamentally, we need to confront deep-rooted social norms that define women to be the caretakers at home.
But it is also a huge opportunity for gender equality in Southeast Asia: first because it will create quality jobs for women; and second, it will also free up their time for educa...

Achieving gender equality globally will bring positive change to all of society, not just women. Yet, today only 43% of development finance consider gender as an important element. This is the first decrease in a decade.
Even though the focus on gender equality in vital sectors like agriculture and education is high, it is crucial to boost support across all sectors. For example, development partners need to reverse the downward trend of funding for women’s rights organisations and feminist movements. Today, less than 1% of aid goes to these organisations, who have positive and lasting impact on gender equality. Another example is support to women while delivering humanitarian assistance. It is concerning that only 18% of humanitarian assistance is considering gender equality.
The Netherlands, Ireland and Canada consider gender as an important element in around 80% of their aid. We need all ...

- Description
- With the rapid dissemination of information across online platforms, falsehoods can spread like wildfire, fuelling division, sowing confusion and eroding trust in both institutions and other people. Misinformation can arise from mistakes or misunderstandings, while disinformation is deliberately crafted to deceive and manipulate. But both can have far-reaching consequences, from undermining democratic processes to endangering public health.
This video presents a new OECD report, Facts not Fakes, which outlines a policy framework to tackle disinformation and strengthen information integrity. The report emphasises the need for democracies to champion diverse, high-quality information spaces that support freedom of opinion and expression, along with policies that may be utilised to increase the degree of accountability and transparency of online platforms. This video also includes interviews from high-level speakers who attended the OECD Conference on Tackling disinformatio...

- On 4 December, OECD’s DICE (Dialogue on Inclusion, Cultural Diversity and Equity) teamed up with various organisations to celebrate and actively support the #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisabilities. Together, we orchestrated a series of recreational activities designed to promote awareness about disabilities within the OECD, with the objective of initiating a conversation emphasising that our limitations are not inherently tied to our disabilities, but rather stem from the societal constraints that fail to incorporate our diversity.
