- Critical raw materials are under pressure as export restrictions surge globally – reshaping trade, supply chains and economic security. Discover the OECD’s latest 2026 findings and what they mean for the future.
This video presents key insights from the OECD Inventory of Export Restrictions on Critical Raw Materials 2026. Restrictions have increased fivefold since 2009, with 16% of global trade now affected. Exposure is highest for strategic minerals with around 70% of cobalt and manganese exports, 47% of graphite and 45% of rare earth elements facing constraints. These measures tighten supply, raise volatility and risk fragmenting global markets.
Presented at the OECD Critical Minerals Forum, the analysis highlights growing use of restrictions across a wider range of countries and the urgent need for co-operation, transparency and diversified supply to support stable global growth.

Crowdsourced forecasting offers an innovative approach to government foresight. Crowdsourced forecasting is the practice of aggregating quantitative predictions about future events or trends from large groups of people. It represents a substantive improvement in predictive work because multiple perspectives help mitigate the impact of cognitive biases and individuals can be trained to produce better forecasts. In this masterclass, Dr. Christopher Dictus from the RAND Forecasting Initiative provided an introduction to crowdsourced forecasting: demonstrating how the process works and how it can be integrated with other foresight methods.

- Rural populations are shrinking. In 11 of the 29 OECD countries included in the OECD Reinforcing Rural Resilience report (https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/reinforcing-rural-resilience_7cd485e3-en.html), rural populations are declining, not only as percentage of national populations but also in absolute numbers. Rural regions close to cities are also exposed to this trend, particularly if their populations tend more easily to move to urban areas. Despite not being an OECD Member country, Kazakhstan is experiencing similar trends. During the Soviet Union, its urban population was 53% but today that percentage has increased to 63%. Now only 37% of its population is living in rural areas, with only 5% of its GDP coming from the agricultural sector.

- Why do women still receive lower pensions than men? Across OECD countries, women receive only 77 cents in pension income for every dollar received by men, leaving a gender pension gap of 23% on average. The analysis shows how differences in lifetime earnings shape pension outcomes and financial security in old age.
Three factors drive the gap: women spend less time in paid work over their lifetime, are more likely to work part-time when caring for children or relatives and continue to face a gender pay gap. Together, these factors lead to a 35% difference in lifetime earnings between men and women.
The findings also show that women face a higher risk of old-age poverty. While progress has been made, policies that close the gender pay gap and support a more equal sharing of paid and unpaid work remain important to improving retirement outcomes.
