- Nine in ten teachers are satisfied with their jobs, yet one in five report a lot of stress. Just two of the findings from the new OECD TALIS report, the largest survey of teachers and school leaders in the world.
TALIS captured the perspectives of 280,000 teachers across over 50 education systems. In this episode of Top Class, OECD project manager Ruochen Li, who led the TALIS team, and Antonia Wulff, Director of Research, Policy and Advocacy at Education International, tell the OECD’s Duncan Crawford about the findings.

- Rural populations are shrinking. In 11 of the 29 OECD countries included in the OECD Reinforcing Rural Resilience report (https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/reinforcing-rural-resilience_7cd485e3-en.html), rural populations are declining, not only as percentage of national populations but also in absolute numbers. Rural regions close to cities are also exposed to this trend, particularly if their populations tend more easily to move to urban areas. Despite not being an OECD Member country, Kazakhstan is experiencing similar trends. During the Soviet Union, its urban population was 53% but today that percentage has increased to 63%. Now only 37% of its population is living in rural areas, with only 5% of its GDP coming from the agricultural sector.

Climate change is accelerating and so are its costs. The good news is that we have evidence that economics now favour climate action.
OECD-UNDP analysis shows that faster climate action could lift global GDP by 0.2% by 2040 and by up to 13% by 2100 once avoided economic losses from climate damages are factored in. And solar and wind are often the cheapest sources of power now.
But momentum on climate action has slowed. COP30 is a chance to reignite progress. OECD evidence and policy insights can help drive co-operation for lasting global gains.

Global growth proved more resilient than expected in the first half of 2025, especially in many emerging markets but also the United States. Industrial production and trade were buoyed by front-loading ahead of higher tariffs. US tariffs on imports from almost all countries have increased since May, reaching an estimated effective rate of 19.5% at the end of August, the highest since the mid-1930s. While the full impact of tariff increases is still unfolding, early signs of effects are visible in consumer behaviour, labour markets and prices.
