- Description
- NYU Washington, DC and the John Brademas Center of New York University co-hosted a Salon Series conversation with U.S. Congresswoman Diana DeGette and NYU President Emeritus John Sexton who discussed Sexton's most recent book, Standing for Reason: The University in a Dogmatic Age. The conversation was moderated by Terry Hartle, Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, American Council on Education.
In Standing for Reason: The University in a Dogmatic Age, John Sexton argues that over six decades, a “secular dogmatism,” impenetrable by dialogue or reason, has come to dominate political discourse in America. Political positions, elevated to the status of doctrinal truths, now simply are “revealed.” Our leaders and our citizens suffer from an allergy to nuance and complexity, and the enterprise of thought is in danger. Sexton sees our universities, the engines of knowledge and stewards of thought, as the antidote, and he describes the policies universit...

- Have you noticed how certain smells immediately bring you back to a certain time and place? Memories are even stronger when the original experiences are accompanied by unpleasant odors, a team of NYU researchers has found.
“These results demonstrate that bad smells are capable of producing memory enhancements in both adolescents and adults, pointing to new ways to study how we learn from and remember positive and negative experiences,” explains Catherine Hartley, an assistant professor in New York University’s Department of Psychology and the senior author of the paper, which appears in the journal Learning and Memory.
The study broadens our understanding of what can drive Pavlovian responses and points to how negative experiences influence our ability to recall past events.

- Fish are able to move in groups, without separating or colliding, due to a newly discovered dynamic: the followers interact with the wake left behind by the leaders. The finding offers new insights into animal locomotion and points to potential ways to harness energy from natural resources, such as rivers or wind.
“Air or water flows naturally generated during flight or swimming can prevent collisions and separations, allowing even individuals with different flapping motions to travel together,” explains Joel Newbolt, a doctoral candidate in New York University’s Department of Physics and the lead author of the research, which appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Notably, this phenomenon allows slower followers to keep up with faster-flapping leaders by surfing on their wake.”
