- Description
- Every July, the quiet town of Burwell — population 1,000 — swells with life. The streets fill with boots and belt buckles, cowboy hats and hometown pride. For 104 years, Nebraska’s Big Rodeo has brought a crowd, and this year was no different.
“It’s just huge,” Nebraska's Big Rodeo Official Jess Helgoth said.
According to the Burwell Economic Development Board, more than 24,000 unique cell phone pings were recorded in town during rodeo week last year — a signal of just how many people descend on the community.
“I’ve really enjoyed the community and going to the parades,” rodeo attendee Jace Gace said. “The rodeo is a blast. You get to see crazy stuff happen that doesn’t happen at other rodeos.”
What kind of action do fans come to see? Bull riding. Bareback broncs. Wild horses. Wagon races. A kids' rodeo. And even a few backflips.
This year’s event also delivered laughs, thanks to Nebraska nativ...

- After transferring from Iowa, Josh Dix is settling into his new role with the Creighton Bluejays—and for the Omaha native, it already feels like home.
“I’ve been here for about eight weeks, and I’m really enjoying my teammates, being around them every day,” Dix said. “The coaching staff’s really cool, and I just love it here.”
Dix, who grew up in the Omaha Metro, has long been familiar with Creighton basketball. His father held season tickets while Dix was in elementary school, taking him to up to 10 games a year.
“When I was really young, like second through fifth grade, I’d go to a lot of games,” he said. “The fans, the atmosphere—it was super cool. I looked up to the players.”
Now, Dix is the one wearing Bluejay blue. But the decision to transfer wasn’t solely about basketball.
His mother, who is battling cancer and has completed 50 rounds of chemotherapy, was a key reason he wanted to com...

- As the Kearney Legion baseball team prepares for district play later this month, one left-handed pitcher is standing tall—on the mound and in the classroom.
Derrick Nonhoff, a towering southpaw, has become a key part of the team’s rotation. But he’s quick to credit the teammates he’s grown up with for his success.
“A lot of these guys, we grew up playing travel ball together,” Nonhoff said. “We’ve known each other since we were six years old.”
That chemistry has been built over four high school seasons, and it shows as the team makes a push for a summer state title.
Off the field, Nonhoff is just as impressive. He recently graduated with nearly a 4.0 GPA and scored over 30 on the ACT. This fall, he’ll attend Dordt University, where he plans to major in biomedical engineering—a rare program that guided his college decision.

Four student-athletes from the Nebraska volleyball team were named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team on Thursday after a vote by the league's 18 head coaches.
Juniors Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly were three of just five unanimous selections to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. They were joined on the 20-player team by senior Rebekah Allick.
The coaches picked Nebraska as the top team in the preseason poll. The Huskers won their fifth Big Ten title in 2024 with a 19-1 conference record to share the crown with Penn State. Nebraska finished the season at 33-3 and reached the NCAA Semifinals. Penn State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and UCLA rounded out the top five.
Jackson, a junior middle blocker, had a breakout year in 2024, earning AVCA All-America First Team and unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors. Jackson averaged 2.62 kills per set with a .439 hitting percentage, which ranked six...

Lutovsky, now a veteran presence on the Huskers’ offensive line, said he’s embracing a bigger leadership role this season.
“It’s not something I’m naturally used to,” he said. “But I’ve realized I need to step up a little more, be more vocal—not because I want to, but because that’s what the team needs.”

“It’s just the bond we have, how we play with each other,” Throckmorton said. “Nothing has gotten in between us as a team.”
That mutual respect carries over on the field.
“I feel good about this team. We’ve got a bunch of great guys,” he said. “Most of us have been playing together since we started baseball, so we’ve got a good bond.”

Entering Year 3 under head coach Matt Rhule, expectations are sky-high — including talk of double-digit wins. But if Rhule feels pressure, he’s not showing it.
“I don't feel pressure from anything other than what I expect of myself,” Rhule said. “I expect to do certain things, and I own the responsibility to do it. It’s not pressure — it’s the standard.”
Rhule acknowledged the team wasn’t ready for 10 wins in Year 1 or Year 2 but believes they’re now much closer.
A major reason for that confidence? Sophomore quarterback Dylan Raiola, who has quickly become the face of the program.

- HASTINGS, NEB. — The Hastings City Planning Commission has taken initial steps to redevelop approximately 55,000 square feet of the former Kmart on Theatre Drive, across from the airport, into self-storage units. City Planner Ember Batelaan said the best offer for the space is to convert it into nearly 300 self-storage units, a service the city needs.
"They've been trying to find someone to take up that space of the building," Batelaan said. "But due to the height of the ceiling, as well as the floor plan, other uses just didn't end up working out."

Of the six transfers joining the program this offseason, two met with the media: Pryce Sandfort, who arrives from Iowa, and Kendall Blue, a transfer guard from St. Thomas in Minnesota.
