Peter Mertens is the general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Belgium. If recent years in British politics have had a manic-depressive quality, with extreme highs and extreme lows, the Workers’ Party of Belgium under Mertens takes a very different approach. They might be relatively unknown in the UK, but as we speak, they’re fourth in the national polls, and leading in Brussels. They’ve got 15 parliamentary seats – not bad for out and proud Marxist-Leninists.
How have they done it? By growing cautiously and deliberately. They run community health clinics, organise locally, and impose strict internal discipline. Their party prioritises unity and strategy. But how well-placed is it to take on the overlapping crises ...

Green party candidate Zoë Garbett has won the Hackney mayoralty with an astounding 35,720 votes, leaving Labour rival Caroline Woodley in the dust with only 26,865.
Taking 47.2% of the vote, Garbett comfortably becomes the Greens’ first directly-elected mayor in London.
“People have made it clear that they are desperate for an alternative to this failing Labour government,” Garbett said. “The people of Hackney own Hackney and it’s time to take it back.”
Garbett’s victory is a blow to Labour as the count for Hackney council gets underway. The Greens currently only hold two of the 57 seats in the borough, but are hoping to make significant gains and could even take control of the council.
Hackney has only ever voted in Labour mayors since the directly elected position was created in 2002.
