- Zack Polanski put rent controls back on the agenda on his media round this morning.
The Green party leader made housing a key focus during his unsuccessful bid to become the next MP for Holborn and St Pancras.
But on Novara Live's all-night byelection special, @nojusticemtg argued that his message failed to cut through. The Greens missed an opportunity to run an “incredibly strong and incredibly specific messaging campaign” around rent controls, she said.
YouGov polling from February 2026 shows 78% of Brits would support rent controls.

On Novara Live's all-night byelection special, Ash Sarkar argued that the Greens need to throw their weight behind another issue like Gaza or the wealth tax to get back on track — and that the answer might lie in resisting artificial intelligence and data centres.
While Andy Burnham has taken back some progressive ground on issues like public control of utilities and housing, the new prime minister hasn't squeezed Zack Polanski on AI. It's an opportunity, Sarkar said, to cut through on jobs and the environment.

- An elderly woman whose forced eviction from her home of 70 years brought thousands of Spanish people out in protest, has died, Madrid’s tenants union said.
Maricarmen Abascal, 87, had been hospitalised since 23 September, when she was forcibly removed from her home of seven decades.
Abascal became embroiled in a years-long eviction row after her corporate landlord increased her rent from €500 to €2,650. The company later reduced it to €1,650, which still exceeded Abascal’s monthly pension.
Last week, the government fast-tracked approval on a package of reforms including a temporary ban on evictions of vulnerable people, but opposition parties blocked the reforms in parliament.
On Friday, prime minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap general election, saying: “We must mobilise and secure a much broader progressive majority in parliament, one that allows us to overcome the elites.”
