- Progressive voters are unhappy that Andy Burnham voted for the Iraq war – but few remember that leftwing icon Tony Benn prepared to use troops to break a strike whilst he was a minister.
“If that kind of archive existed in the late 70s, early 80s,” says Aaron Bastani on Downstream, “I doubt [Benn] would have been the standard bearer of the Labour left. But people didn’t know about things that happened 20 years earlier in the way they now do.”
James Butler says that it’s “democratic” that politicians should be held accountable for their past choices – but it also feels like “people can’t change positions” anymore.
“The whole communicative regime has changed, and I don’t think politics has caught up with it at all,” he adds.

The footage has prompted comparisons with the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Local community members held a vigil on Tuesday, chanting “justice for Yves”.
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is demanding that the death be “swiftly, thoroughly and transparently investigated”.

“The Palestinian Authority has started a war, and it will get a war,” he said.
Smotrich has played a major role in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, which has killed 72,000 people at a conservative estimate, with many tens of thousands more feared dead from disease and other less direct causes.

How did we get here? And what happens next?
On this week’s Downstream, Aaron Bastani is joined by James Butler, contributing editor at the London Review of Books and co-founder of Novara Media, to make sense of the paradigm shift underway in British politics.
How has first past the post, long promoted as a source of political stability, become the background for systemic chaos? Why is there such a democratic deficit in Britain, and what can be done about it? Have two lost decades on the economy simply killed both historic parties? And where should progressives position themselves, as we now begin the slow march towards the final general election of the 2020s?

If it is, the first thing that would need to happen is a massive independent audit, followed by numerous expulsions, says journalist Paul Holden.
He tells Novara Live’s Aaron Bastani that the investigation should focus on the role of the rightwing think tank Labour Together, which led a smear campaign against Holden and other journalists.
Auditors should also look into “the historic shenanigans that have happened in the Labour party, and you need to just absolutely clear house,” he says.
“I do honestly think that if you were to do an outside external forensic audit of Labour party finances, quite a few people would have to leave the party as a result,” he adds.
As well as an audit, there needs to be a "radical democratic transformation” at the party’s grassroots to make sure MPs are invested in their communities and not career politicians, he adds.
