- With under one week until Christmas, the Reno Police Department (RPD) is warning residents of holiday-related crime, including porch package theft.
Among RPD's recommendations is ensuring your deliveries are being made to a secure location. This can mean including specific delivery instructions for your home, or having packages delivered to more secure locations like your workplace or a carrier location instead.
Officials also suggest that you use delivery alerts to track your packages. However, if you do use a delivery alert system, make sure to verify any alerts you may get, as scammers will also try to take advantage of the increase in package deliveries over the holidays.
On Monday, Carson City resident Robert Briggs was almost the victim of one such scam claiming to be an alert from the U.S. Post Office (USPS). But when the link he was sent directed him enter his credit card information, he decided to double check with officials.

Numbers are showing Latino population in northern Nevada has been growing, especially in the last decade. With University of Nevada Reno now an emerging Hispanic-serving institution, with nearly 25% of students identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population has grown to 30% in the state and 25% in Washoe County. For almost 20 years University of Nevada Reno's Latino Research Center has focused on research and advocacy within the community.
UNR's Latino research center director, Jafeth Sanchez, Ph.D., says in recent studies the top issues among voters in the Hispanic community are the cost of living, access to health care, and immigration policy.

- Sparks City Council voted unanimously to move forward with applying for a grant to fund a goat grazing wildfire mitigation project, similar to other projects we've seen around Northern Nevada. The grant money would come from the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to bring up to 200 Spanish goats to Sparks.
In the proposed project, the goats would target the 100-acre portion of the Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility, near Steamboat Creek and Veteran's Parkway.
According to meeting materials, Sparks city officials want to target this area specifically to avoid an evacuation of the facility and reduce wildfire risk in case there's a serious power failure from powerlines.

Tik Tok user Tao Feng (@tao7570) captured a large bear run across the mountainside on the Ridgerun Trail at Heavenly Ski Resort.
Feng told media outlets he was skiing down the run at about 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10 when the bear came charging out of the woods.

- The residents of Yerington say they've been out of touch -- literally. Their phones haven't been working consistently for month. There's little they can do about it.
Frank Pizzo said his landline phone hasn't worked properly for months.
"Well, it was back in July. The summertime. We could not from our landline call anybody on a cell phone and that went on for about three and a half, four months. I probably called Frontier at least 20 times at least, and got absolutely nowhere over it," he said. "What are people supposed to do? I said, I depend on my phone. "
Frontier is the company that provides landline telephone service. Pizzo said some days he's not able to dial out and others can't call him. He said he's missed medial appointments.

- Last Tuesday, the Bureau of Land Management leased 96,605 acres of land in Nevada for geothermal energy production as part of the BLM’s efforts to achieve the Biden Administration’s goal of attaining 25 gigawatts of solar, wind and geothermal production on public lands by 2025.
Ormat Technologies, an international company based in Reno, operates three geothermal facilities in Nevada and altogether produces more than 400 megawatts of geothermal energy. The Steamboat Geothermal Complex in Reno produces 100 megawatts, enough to power every residential home in the City of Reno.
“Geothermal energy is awesome,” said Paul Thompson, Vice President of Business Development at Ormat Technologies. “We bring up hot water from underneath the Earth’s surface. We use the heat to heat a secondary working fluid, which vaporizes, builds pressure and turns a turbine, so we’re using the natural heat of the Earth to produce electricity with zero emissions.”

- Mother Nature could put a damper on seeing the annular solar eclipse in western Nevada on Saturday morning.
As of Friday morning, there looks to be roughly 50-60% cloud cover across much of northern Nevada during the time of the eclipse.
Timeline of events on Saturday morning:

8:07 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. - Partial eclipse
9:21 a.m. - Maximum eclipse
9:21 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. - Partial eclipse
10:46 a.m. - Total sun
Saturday's annular solar eclipse is unique because it consists of a "ring of fire" or an outer ring of the sun shining through. A solar eclipse is when the moon is positioned between the earth and sun allowing for the moon to cast its shadow on earth. When the moon partially covers the sun — it's called an annular eclipse.
