My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones, with all those affected, and with the people of Belgium. We all stand together with our Ally Belgium on this dark day.

This is a cowardly attack. An attack on our values and on our open societies. Terrorism will not defeat democracy and take away our freedoms.

We have decided to increase the alert state at NATO Headquarters. We remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation very closely.

The Substantial NATO-Georgia Package, or SNGP, contains 13 projects designed to improve Georgia’s defence capability. Some tackle areas such as cyber defence and strategic communications, while another, the Defence Institution Building School, provides development training within the security sector. But in terms of practical skills on the battlefield, the Joint Training and Evaluation Centre, or JTEC, is perhaps the most tangible.

Description: Today, Secretary of Defence Ash Carter announced that the US plans to increase significantly its military presence in Europe.

I strongly welcome this proposal.

The budget request will, if approved, lead to a quadrupling of funding to 3.4 billion US dollars in 2017 for the US force posture in Europe.

This will fund more rotational US forces, more training and exercises. More prepositioning, war fighting gear and infrastructure.

This is a clear sign of the enduring commitment by the United States to European security.

It will be a timely and significant contribution to NATO’s deterrence, and collective defence.

This proposal is a vivid demonstration of the strength of our transatlantic bond.

Description: The Estonian infantry successfully tested their newly acquired tank busting Javelin missile system at a military firing range.

The US built system works on a fire-and-forget basis, allowing the operator to relocate quickly after firing, and is specially designed to strike armored targets from above where armor is usually thinnest.

Description: Built in 1935 and long respected as a symbol of Latvia’s independence, Freedom Monument in Riga has seen the country’s occupation by both the Soviets and the Nazis and Latvia’s subsequent liberation.

Standing more than 40 metres tall, with a woman, affectionately known as Milda, on top holding three stars, the monument is to this day, the centrepiece of many Latvian political and cultural events.
