- Controlling NATO's air assets

- It is made up of 10 shipping containers, equipment weighing 360 tonnes and is staffed by 160 operators. NATO’s Deployable Air Command and Control Centre has been moved by air, land and sea, from its home in Poggio Renatico, Italy, to Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, 600 km south of the DACCC’s home base. The aim was to show NATO’s readiness and ability to swiftly deploy to counter threats to Alliance security. The DACCC, as it’s known, can be deployed to control NATO’s air assets in times of crisis. Footage includes shots of the containers, computer screens, planes and soundbites from various personnel.

- NATO’s last counter-piracy surveillance aircraft is flying her final mission, as part of Operation Ocean Shield. The Royal Danish Air Force crew of a Challenger surveillance aircraft tells us how much the coast of Somalia has changed since the height of pirate activity in the Horn of Africa.
The mission has been just one part of a highly successful coordinated international response, including the European Union, NATO, the United States and other independent nations to the threat of piracy that, in its peak, had an economic effect in the range of US $7 billion.

NATO announces military exercises well in advance and they’re subject to international observation.

- Russian officials have claimed that NATO has violated the NATO-Russia Founding Act.
In this video, one of the key negotiators of the Founding Act, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, explains why this is a myth. NATO has respected its commitments, Russia has not. By signing the Founding Act, Russia pledged not to threaten or use force against NATO Allies and any other state. It has broken this commitment, with the illegal annexation of Crimea, the territory of a sovereign state and Russia continues to support militants in eastern Ukraine.

Even Russian scientists have confirmed this.

- At NATO exercise “Crna Gora 2016”, 32 nations came together to practise their response to any given crisis. Among those countries were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and host nation Montenegro. These nations have been ravaged by floods in recent years, particularly in 2014, when they worked together to provide disaster relief. The exercise is an opportunity to practise and reinforce those relationships. With Montenegro due to join NATO in the near future, the exercise is also an opportunity for the nation to demonstrate its willingness to work with other nations and its readiness to become a full member of the Alliance.

- High-tech and low-tech non-lethal weapons give troops options to warn or stop civilians who may or may not pose threats at vehicle checkpoints and perimeter security areas.
Troops from five nations (Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States) tested non-lethal weapons in scenarios mimicking real-world perimeter security and vehicle checkpoint situations.
This exercise, called “NNTEX 16 L” for “NATO Non-Lethal Technological Exercise Land, 2016” took place during September and October 2016 in Camp Elsenborn Lager, in Belgium.
This is the second exercise of its kind (the first being a maritime-based exercise), and it involves various non-lethal weapons and devices being put through the paces by operators. It is supported by NATO’s Defence against Terrorism Programme of Work (DAT POW).

- On 11 November every year, on Lāčplēsis Day, Latvians light thousands of candles to commemorate the soldiers who fell for the country's independence during the First World War.
Latvia was proclaimed the Independent Republic of Latvia on 18 November 1918 but for a year a war was waged with the West Russian Volunteer Army, a force that was also made up of German volunteers. Latvia claimed final victory on 11 November 1919.

- This Estonian submarine served in the Soviet Navy

- Before World War II, EML Lembit was one of the two submarines built by the British for the Republic of Estonia.
The Estonians held the largest and most successful national fund-raising event in Estonian history at which they donated scrap metal in order to pay for the submarine.
When the Soviet Union occupied Estonia during World War II, Lembit became part of the Soviet fleet.
Years later, two veterans who used to serve on the Lembit found the submarine abandoned in a river. It is now on display in the Estonian Maritime Museum.

An unmanned military boat is among the many vehicles and devices that were exercised in Scotland for the ‘robot wars’ exercise otherwise known as Unmanned Warrior. The event was hosted by the Royal Navy, giving an opportunity for industry, academia and UK and US Defence to demonstrate the latest in unmanned aircraft (UAVs), surface and underwater vehicles. The exercise allowed the participants to interact with realistic operational scenarios, share data with operational units, and test and evaluate their equipment.

- Montenegro hosts NATO-led disaster response exercise

- Montenegro is hosting a NATO-run disaster response exercise, Crna Gora 2016, as it continues its accession to NATO membership. The scenarios for the exercise are based on flood response and chemical weapons incidents. It’s been organized by NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) together with Montenegro’s Ministry of Interior. It’s the 16th field exercise to be held by the EADRCC, the first to be hosted by Montenegro. Nearly 700 people are taking part from 32 NATO Allies and partner countries.

- Preparing to deal with the threat from chemical, biological and nuclear weapons

- Not all wars are fought with bombs and bullets. As the threat from chemical, biological and nuclear weapons rises, NATO has stepped up its efforts in providing specialised training to partner countries who are most at threat.
Under NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, a selection of first responders and biological, chemical and nuclear specialists from NATO’s southern partner countries Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia have undergone specialised training at the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence in Vyskov, Czech Republic.
The participants received training in preparing to respond to a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) threat, learning advanced detection and decontamination methods.
At the end of the training, the participants were equipped with enough knowledge to enable them to train first responders in their own countries.

- NATO’s maritime fleet flexes its muscles in the North Atlantic, both for ongoing training and to prepare elements of the force to become part of the NATO Response Force 2017 (Maritime).
Three NATO Maritime Groups participated in NATO exercise Noble Mariner 2016. Noble Mariner was part of a larger UK Royal Navy exercise named Joint Warrior and served as a certification event for the NATO Response Force (NRF) Maritime component.
Training included anti-submarine warfare, mine counter-measures, maritime security, live fire and close air support.
Footage includes marines performing anti-landing drills with small arms fire, anti-submarine warfare drills, air defence drills. Various fleet ships manoeuvring at sea, helicopters taking off and flying over exercise area. Aerial shots of ships from various nations.
