- For the Ukrainian soldiers returning from the conflict in the east of the country, the return to civilian life after months on the frontline can be traumatic. NATO is funding psychological rehabilitation seminars run by trained psychologists from the League of Officers – a Ukrainian organisation – to give servicemen and women the tools they need to cope with the readjustment and recognise the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

- Over 400 participants from 11 NATO and partner countries have taken part in a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) exercise in Canada. Hosted by the Canadian Armed Forces, Exercise Precise Response 2017 aimed to test the skills and interoperability of CBRN specialists in a real-time environment with live agents.
Missions throughout the exercise included assessing hazards in multiple compounds, mitigating explosive threats and collecting samples for analysis.

- More than 25,000 service personnel from over 20 NATO Allies and partner nations are taking part in Saber Guardian 2017, the largest of 18 Black Sea region exercises this year. This US-led exercise is being held in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. It's aimed at building readiness and improving interoperability.
In Bordușani, Romania, Romanian military personnel built a floating bridge across the Danube River, allowing Romanian and American vehicles and soldiers to cross over. The river crossing was complemented with a large-scale tactical demonstration, including a tank and ship assault against a simulated enemy providing cover for the crossing vehicles. The work involved 1,500 troops from the Romanian Navy, Air Force and Army, 100 Americans from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Cavalry Regiment and 300 vehicles.

- The “Weapons Intelligence Team” course took place at the NATO Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) Centre of Excellence, in Hoyo de Manzanares, Spain in June 2017.
An “improvised explosive device” (IED), like a roadside bomb, is a type of unconventional explosive weapon that can take any form, is inexpensive and easy to get by terrorists and insurgents. It represents a critical threat both in theatre of operations and at home.
NATO has acquired inputs and intelligence from the analysis of the increasingly sophisticated weapons systems that insurgents and terrorists are using, and has developed an action plan to detect and neutralise IEDs and to identify and disrupt the networks supporting this threat.

- NATO-led exercise Dynamic Mongoose took place in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Iceland. Participants were training anti-submarine warfare (ASW) interoperability and anti-surface capabilities.
Naval forces from Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States participated with ships and submarines, under the command of Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1).
Host nation Iceland provided support both from Reykjavik Harbour and Keflavik Air Base, and the Icelandic Coast Guard also participated. In addition, eight maritime aircraft participated, under operational command of NATO Maritime Air Command.
Research vessel ‘NRV Alliance’ also took part in the exercise this year, to test maritime unmanned systems for anti-submarine warfare.

- The NATO battlegroup based in Latvia has held a capabilities demonstration.
Each of the six enhanced Forward Presence nations took part. The battlegroup was properly stood up at the end of last month.
It’s led by Canada and includes soldiers from Albania, Italy, Poland, Slovenia and Spain. Three other battlegroups are stationed in Estonia, Lithuania and Poland. They are an important part of NATO’s defence and deterrence posture in the eastern and south-eastern part of the Alliance.

The gathering in Riga (Latvia) attracted 28 people from various backgrounds such as coders, journalists and statisticians. - Major Barbancho is a Chinook pilot and Senior Staff Chief of the 5th Spanish Transport Helicopter Battalion (BHELTRA-V). During his participation in NATO’s ISAF mission in Afghanistan, he directed a heroic rescue mission after a helicopter crashed.
"Rescue Under Fire," a movie based on this mission was released in Spain in early 2017 and Major Barbancho and his team participated in the production of the movie as advisors, trainers, movie extras and pilots of the Spanish Army helicopters used in the production.

- At one of Lithuania’s largest annual military exercises, Iron Wolf, distinguished visitors such as Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg view the combat readiness and multinational togetherness of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup situated in Lithuania. The battlegroup is led by Germany and includes troops from Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway.
The display included a bridge building exercise enabling the transport of armoured vehicles across a river.
As well as troops from NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Lithuania and Poland, the exercise also involved soldiers from 10 other NATO countries.

- NATO’s spearhead land force, the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) practised rapid movement to NATO’s southern flank for the first time. Ready to move within 2-3 days, the multinational force of Albanian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish, UK and US troops went from their home bases in Europe to the Cincu training grounds in Romania, some driving vehicles and equipment from ports in Greece up through Bulgaria to their destination.
In Romania, they met host nation forces and trained side by side in a multinational battle group, culminating in a live fire display for VIPs on Wednesday 14 June 2017.

- U.S. Marines have stormed a beach in Latvia. They’ve been taking part in one of the largest maritime exercises in northern Europe, BALTOPS 2017. The exercise involves 14 NATO Allies and partner countries and is taking place at sea, on land and in the air. The U.S. Marines come from a reserve unit, based in Texas. The footage was filmed by the Latvian Ministry of Defence. It includes shots of US AAV-7 amphibious vehicles and LCAC hovercraft.

- Norwegian soldiers have arrived in Lithuania. Norway has sent around 200 troops to the country to join a multinational NATO battlegroup led by the Germans. The move is in support of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP), which has also seen the setting up of three other battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia and Poland. NATO’s eFP, decided at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016, is a response to changing security environments in the east of the Alliance.
Earlier this year NATOChannel met with Lieutenant Silje Johansen Willassen, tank commander of the Telemark Batallion, during her pre-deployment training. Now she has arrived in Lithuania along with her platoon, ready to be part of the German-led battlegroup.

- 🇪🇸Spanish troops prepare to deploy to 🇱🇻Latvia

- The Spanish Army is deploying a heavy armoured unit abroad for the first time as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence in the east of the Alliance.
Around 300 troops, 250 of which are from the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Extremadura XI, including a logistics unit and a team of engineers, will constitute the second biggest contingent of the Latvian-based multinational battlegroup led by Canada.
The battlegroup will also be supported by Albania, Italy, Poland and Slovenia.
The Spanish unit will also support with Leopard 2E main battle tanks and Pizarro combat vehicles. The deployment will last six months.

- U.S. tankers are currently on deployment in Romania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Their vehicle, their home away from home is the M1 Abrams.
The tank’s main 120-millimetre gun can reach 4,000 metres. It can take four crew members and travel at 35 miles an hour.
The US 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team is on deployment in Romania and other Eastern European countries to support security and stability.

- At an athletics track in Kyiv, injured servicemen, many of whom are missing limbs, take part in various sporting events including running, weights, rowing, shot put, swimming and archery to see who will compete for Ukraine at this year’s Invictus Games in Toronto from 23 to 30 September 2017.
NATO has put forward 2.25 million Euros for a rehabilitation Trust Fund for Ukraine to help those servicemen injured in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to get back on their feet, part of which is helping to fund the trials.

In Lithuania, elves no longer only live in fantasy books – every day, they fight a real battle against fake news trolls on the Internet. Russian-backed disinformation activities on social and traditional media in the country are considered by Lithuanian authorities as a “high-level security threat” and have been included as one of the major issues in the 2017 National Security Threat Assessment report issued by Lithuania’s State Security Department.

- According to UN figures, the Ukraine conflict has around 10,000 killed in action, but many more wounded. In 2015, Vadym Sviridenko lost both his arms and legs after his convoy was ambushed. Vadym has since undergone extensive rehabilitation treatment both in the United States and in Ukraine, where he now runs marathons.

- NATO Allies mark the beginning of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence at Tapa Army Base, Estonia. Troops from France and the United Kingdom raised their national flags at the ceremony.
NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence, decided at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016, will see four new deployments that bring multinational battlegroups into Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to respond to changing security environments on the Alliance’s eastern flank.

- Belgian fighter pilots tested for real in Benelux air policing mission

- In a new arrangement for NATO air policing, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will work together to secure their skies. While air assets will patrol their own skies as normal, when they cross into the airspace of one of the other two countries participating in the missions they will pass under the control of that country, thus increasing effectiveness and pooling of resources.
Belgium is the first country in the lead and has been tested more than once this year during intercepts of commercial aircraft that have lost communications with air traffic control.
When an Air India plane lost communications with air control due to a technical failure, Hungarian, German and, finally, Belgian pilots flew fighter jets alongside the 787 Dreamliner plane, which was carrying 231 passengers, for two hours as it passed over Europe.
