- Making aircraft less detectable
- Date posted
- Description
- A team of NATO experts is developing new technology that will
make military aircraft less detectable. Most forms of aircraft need
actuators (vertical and horizontal flaps) to enable flight and control.
The technology being developed leaves these flaps redundant in
certain phases of flight, replacing them with an active flow control
system using air to help manoeuvre the aircraft.
The research into innovative control effectors, or ICE, is being
carried out by a NATO task group under NATO’s Science and
Technology Organization, which includes representatives from the
US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the US Air Force Academy
in Colorado, the Illinois Institute of Technology and Lockheed
Martin.
The first model of the ICE aircraft was made in 2015, measuring just
28 centimetres in wingspan. It has since undergone numerous
rounds of testing in a wind tunnel at the US Air Force Acade...

- Being a good cyber defender means more than possessing the technical expertise – it means being a good communicator, and being capable of devising effective policies to address rapidly developing crises. As the cyber threat grows in size and complexity, NATO needs these experts more than ever.
NATO’s Deputy Head of Cyber Defence, Chelsey Slack, recently helped judge the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, co-hosted by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and the Atlantic Council in Geneva, Switzerland. In this video, Slack explains why encouraging and cultivating well-rounded cyber defenders today is necessary for protecting the Alliance’s networks in the future.

NATO Heads of State and Government wrapped up two days of talks at the NATO Summit in Brussels on 12 July, 2018, taking key decisions to further boost security in and around Europe by strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence posture, projecting stability and fighting terrorism, enhancing its partnership with the European Union, modernising the Alliance and achieving fairer burden-sharing.
NATO leaders agreed on a new initiative that will boost the Alliance’s readiness to rapidly respond to any potential crisis, the ‘Four Thirties’. Allies have committed to having 30 mechanised battalions, 30 air squadrons and 30 combat vessels ready to use within 30 days, by 2020.
Achieving a fairer burden-sharing was also a key topic of discussion. All Allies took stock of progress in implementing NATO’s Defence Investment Pledge, by moving towards spending 2% of GDP on defence by 2024....

- In the event of a crisis, NATO must quickly assemble and deploy forces to defend its Allies by whatever means necessary – land, sea or air. But pulling off this logistical feat requires practice.
NATO Allies conduct a wide range of exercises to test their ability to rapidly deploy troops directly into combat. This year, US Marines and Romanian naval infantry deployed from the Baltic Sea as part of Exercise Baltic Operations 18; US and Polish airborne troops hit the battlefield as part of Exercise Swift Response 18; and US and German Army engineers constructed bridges to cross rivers during Exercise Saber Strike 18. The exercises took place in Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Romania.

- NATO cooperates with different partners all around the world to ensure its operations can run smoothly. Engaging with civil aviation is key in an increasingly busy airspace. Therefore, NATO works together with organisations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and EUROCONTROL for accommodation of military operations, planning of military exercises, day-to-day information-sharing, executing air policing activities, as well as working on projects to ensure safety of air traffic in different regions. One of the more notable civil-military initiatives by ICAO – the Baltic Sea Project Team – recently brought together NATO and Russia alongside other countries to cooperate in ensuring safety of air operations over the Baltic Sea.

To address the threat of sea mines, the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Groups (SNMCMGs) patrol the Alliance’s waters 365 days a year. Join UK Royal Navy Sub-lieutenant Nick Lockyer, a young officer aboard the survey ship HMS Enterprise, as he stands watch on a darkened bridge.
The Enterprise currently serves as the flagship of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2), which is tasked with deterring the threat of sea mines in the Alliance’s southern seas. - Description
- The sea is a difficult environment to deal with in an emergency situation. Submarine rescue requires multinational cooperation and training among NATO Allies and other nations to develop tactics and test cutting-edge technologies and equipment.
The International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISMERLO) was established by NATO, following the disaster in 2000 with the Russian submarine Kursk, when all 118 submariners on board tragically died. ISMERLO aims to prevent submarine accidents and respond on a global basis if they do occur.

- Eyes on ISIS
- Date posted
- Description
- In October 2016, Allies agreed to provide support to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS with NATO’s AWACS surveillance aircraft. Their advanced sensors allow them to fly in Turkey while observing and managing the airspace in Iraq and Syria. NATO AWACS aircraft help improve the Coalition’s air picture. This makes the skies safer and Coalition air operations even more efficient.
The AWACS aircraft support the Coalition with air surveillance and
airspace management – this includes directing aircraft where to fly
and at what altitude. AWACS does not coordinate Coalition air
strikes or provide engagement clearances for fighter aircraft.
Under normal circumstances, the aircraft operates for about
eight hours, at 30,000 feet (9,150 metres) and covers a
surveillance area of more than 120,000 square miles (310,798
square kilometres).

- Description
- During Exercise Real Thaw 2018, the Portuguese CIMIC (civil-military cooperation) team organised the event “Pilot for a day” at Monte Real Air Base. Two children aged 8, Lourenço and Inês, from a local school of the closest city Leiria, spent a day as jet pilots, guided by a pilot of the base, Lt João Franco.
During the day, the two children dressed up as real jet pilots, played with a flight simulator, sat inside a real F-16 jet, watched the jets’ take-offs at the run-way and fulfilled every child’s dream.
