Law enforcement will be focusing extra attention on drunk drivers during a DWI enforcement and education campaign Aug. 16 through September 1.

- The Minnesota State Patrol is asking for the public’s help identifying a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run Aug. 2 in Oak Park Heights, Minn.
One bicyclist — 37-year-old Mai D. Yang — died Monday from her injuries. E. Xiong, Yang’s husband and the other bicyclist, was critically injured and is recovering at Regions Hospital.
The Minnesota State Patrol and Oak Parks Heights police have yet to locate the suspect vehicle or its driver. The couple was hit head-on around 11:50 p.m. near the Wendy’s on 60th Street North, the frontage road along Highway 36.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle or its driver is asked to call State Patrol Sgt. Eric Zastrow at 651-539-1151 or the Oak Park Heights Police Department at 651-439-4723.

- Law enforcement officers have heard all kinds of excuses from speeders. However, speed is a leading contributing factor in fatal and serious injury crashes, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety (DPS/OTS).
In the last three years (2011-2013), illegal and unsafe speed was attributed to 212 fatal crashes, 235 deaths and 666 serious injuries. In many crashes, additional factors such as alcohol and distraction often combine with speeding to wreck cars and lives.
Data shows that speeding doesn't save much time. Traveling at 55 mph versus 45 mph for a 10-mile journey only shaves off about two and one-half minutes of travel time.
OTS is an anchoring partner of the state's Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) traffic safety initiative.

- The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS/OTS) highlights the findings of the Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts 2013 report. Peggy Riggs also shares a personal story. Her son, David, was killed by a driver who was texting.
After a jump in 2012, Minnesota traffic fatalities dropped to 387 last year, the second lowest total in a decade. The top contributing factor was drinking and driving, which killed 117 people last year.
While fewer people died on Minnesota roads, the total number of crashes increased by 12 percent to 77,707 in 2013. Driver inattention/distraction, failure to yield right-of-way and illegal/unsafe speed continue to be the top contributors to all crashes.

The Minnesota State Patrol is looking for the public's help tracking down a semi that illegally passed a stopped school bus May 30, nearly hitting a young female student waiting alongside the highway.
Cameras inside the bus captured the close call, which happened on Highway 23 near Paynesville and New London. Footage shows the semi blow past the stopped bus — lights flashing and stop arm down — and continue along the highway. The girl and bus driver were not injured.
Several witnesses called 911 but were unable to provide enough details for authorities to locate the semi. Anyone with information about this incident or the semi is asked to call Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Brian Reu at 651-405-6047.

- The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) effort to learn the identities of dozens of sets of human remains has led to the identification of a long-unknown murder victim in Wisconsin.
DNA tests have now identified a body discovered in November 1993 in Dresser, Wisconsin, as Pearline Roberta Walton, DOB 12-23-1970, of Minneapolis. Walton was last seen in the Twin Cities in early summer 1993. Since the discovery of her remains two decades ago, Polk County (Wisconsin) Sheriff's Office investigators have been attempting to learn her identity as part of their investigation into her death.
Investigators urge anyone with information about Walton's activities in 1993 or with information about the circumstances of her death to contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 715-485-8366.
