Our Minnesota Air Rescue Team (MART) was called to assist when water levels and strong currents complicated ground rescue efforts.
Our pilots and Saint Paul Fire Department rescuers successfully lifted the stranded pair to safety and flew them to the Ely Airport.

- Updated law concerning school bus safety
- Runtime

- Description
- Legislators updated the law that requires drivers to stop when a school bus’s stop arm is out, closing a dangerous loophole. Previously, the law required drivers to stop for a bus when its red flashing lights were on and the stop arm was extended. Alarmingly, this created a situation in which some drivers might pass the bus when the lights were flashing but the stop arm wasn’t fully extended. This press conference with law enforcement will help address questions on the change.

- We all know the moment: a school bus ahead, lights flashing, kids about to cross. What happens next matters.
We’re partnering with the Minnesota School Bus Operators Association and the Minnesota Association for Pupil Transportation to share an important update to Minnesota’s school bus stop arm law, designed to better protect students.
Previously, drivers were required to stop when the red lights were flashing and the stop arm was extended. That created a dangerous gap, as some drivers tried to pass before the stop arm was deployed.
That loophole is now closed.
Under the updated law:
When red lights are flashing, you must stop at least 20 feet from the bus.
This applies whether the stop arm is extended or not.
This applies to both directions on undivided roads.
Student safety depends on every driver making the right decision in that moment.
Flashing red lights mean stop.
