- Description
- It’s hard to dance a St. Patrick’s Day Jig in the back of a squad car, but there are options available so people can plan for a sober ride home.
The Department of Public Safety held a media availability to announce extra DWI enforcement on Minnesota roads and encourage motorists to find alternative rides home.
Safe Communities of Wright County is an example of one rural Minnesota area which implemented a sober cab ride program to make its roads safer for all motorists. Since the program began in 2010, officials say an increasing number of people are making the smart choice of finding alternative transportation home.
Law enforcement across Minnesota made 1,192 DWI arrests during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday over the past five years (2010 – 2014). Making the choice to drive drunk wrecks lives. Four alcohol-related deaths and 10 life-changing injuries can be linked to St. Patrick’s Day drunk driving the past five years.

Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms at least once a year. Those alarms save lives -- but only if they work.
All smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Working smoke alarms cut in half your risk of dying in a residential fire.

-Use extra precautions when driving around snowplows by keeping at least five car-lengths behind plows.
-If skidding, remain calm, ease foot off the gas, and turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.

- No Excuses: No Need For Speed
- Date posted

- Description
- Law enforcement officers have heard all kinds of excuses from speeders. However, speed is a leading contributing factor in fatal and serious injury crashes, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety (DPS/OTS).
In the last three years (2011-2013), illegal and unsafe speed was attributed to 212 fatal crashes, 235 deaths and 666 serious injuries. In many crashes, additional factors such as alcohol and distraction often combine with speeding to wreck cars and lives.
Data shows that speeding doesn't save much time. Traveling at 55 mph versus 45 mph for a 10-mile journey only shaves off about two and one-half minutes of travel time.
OTS is an anchoring partner of the state's Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) traffic safety initiative.
