- Janine di Giovanni is a veteran war reporter and author who has covered decades of conflicts in Rwanda, Syria, Iraq, Bosnia, and elsewhere, providing a voice to the most vulnerable of victims. Drawing on this experience, the award-winning journalist came to Ukraine to launch The Reckoning Project, collecting evidence of Russian war crimes by on-the-ground reporters.
Talking to the Kyiv Independent in Lviv on May 17, she reflects on her work in Ukraine and other conflicts. Di Giovanni says that despite similar patterns of violence, each story, every painful experience, is unique, naming the Bucha massacre and the kidnapped Ukrainian children as examples. She also stressed the importance of post-war justice — a goal that The Reckoning Project strives for — since without it, unclosed wounds can spark new conflicts in the decades to come.

Melitopol has long been a place of religious and cultural diversity, where Christian churches — including vibrant Protestant communities — coexisted peacefully. But after Russia’s full-scale invasion, everything changed. As occupation took hold, churches became more than places of worship — they became pillars of resilience. Locals gathered for daily prayers in the city’s central square. Russia responded with a crackdown.

- Description
- Melitopol, a city in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Oblast, has long been a place of religious and cultural diversity, where Christian churches, including active Protestant communities, coexisted and cooperated peacefully.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Melitopol fell under occupation early on. In the face of chaos, churches became more than places of worship — they became centers of stability and support. Locals gathered for daily prayers for Ukraine in the city's central square.
Russia responded with repression. Clergy were searched, detained, and interrogated.
In the Kyiv Independent's investigative documentary, No God but Theirs, clergymen from churches banned under Russian occupation share their stories of repression. Their testimonies expose Russia's systematic terror inflicted on Ukrainian Christian communities in Melitopol.

- Description
- On May 20, 2022, the last Ukrainian troops surrendered at Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, a plant in the embattled city of Mariupol where Ukrainian forces held out under constant bombardment and deteriorating conditions after the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Mariupol fell under siege on February 24, 2022, with thousands of civilians killed in the ensuing 86 days before the city was fully encircled and captured by Russia. Several thousand Ukrainian servicemen held their ground at the Azovstal plant for months until they were ordered to surrender, with many being taken prisoner by Russia immediately. Hundreds remain in Russian captivity today, with their years-long suffering serving as a rallying cry for those at home demanding their release.

- The Kyiv Independent's Francis Farrell and Olena Zashko spent a day with one of Ukraine's most effective drone units, "Peaky Blinders," named after the British gang portrayed in a popular British TV show. Although they also employ FPV (first-person view) drones, the unit specializes in drone-dropped bombs and are consistently deployed to the hottest areas of the battlefield.
