- The pavuk (“spider” in English) is a traditional Ukrainian Christmas decoration — a straw ornament suspended from the ceiling and associated with protection and harmony in the household.
Rooted in pre-Christian beliefs, the pavuk reflects how earlier generations understood the natural world. Spiders were seen as guardians that symbolically “wove” order and balance into the home.
The Kyiv Independent visited a workshop at the Ivan Honchar Museum in Kyiv to learn how pavuks are traditionally made.
Once nearly forgotten, the pavuk tradition is now being revived and passed on again, finding its place in Ukrainian homes — as both cultural memory and living practice.

The front line visit comes as Ukraine’s National Guard said its 2nd Khartiia Corps carried out a successful counterattack north of Kupiansk, a development that flatly contradicts Russia’s recent claims of capturing the city.
“The Russians kept going on about Kupyansk – the reality speaks for itself. I visited our troops and congratulated them. Thank you to each and every warrior! I am proud of you! And I thank all of our Land Forces – today is your day!” Zelensky said in a message posted to X accompanying the video, in which he stands in front of the bullet riddled sign marking the entrance to the city, surrounded by anti-drone nets.

"12-year-old Misha from the occupied Donetsk region and 16-year-old Liza from occupied Simferopol were sent to Songdowon camp in North Korea, 9,000 km from home," Rashevska testified. The testimony came at the start of the U.S. Senate Appropriation's hearing on Russia’s mass abduction of Ukrainian children.

- Description
- Nov. 22 is Holodomor Remembrance Day, memorializing one of Ukraine’s most devastating national tragedies.
A man-made famine brought on by the agricultural collectivization policies and actions of the Soviet authorities under the command of Joseph Stalin, the Holodomor claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians in just one year between 1932-33, decimating Ukraine’s agricultural life.
During the famine and for decades after, Soviet authorities, along with Western sympathizers, attempted to cover up the truth about what had happened. While a few reports made their way to the West starting in the 1930s, it was only in the 1980s, with the appearance of two key reports by American and international commissions on the famine, that the wider public learned of the tragedy that had occurred 50 years prior.

- Ukraine marks the Day of Dignity and Freedom on Nov. 21, which marks the start of two major Ukrainian uprisings — the EuroMaidan Revolution and the Orange Revolution.
The holiday was established in 2014 by a presidential decree.
The EuroMaidan Revolution was sparked in November 2013 after pro-Kremlin President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign the long-awaited Association Agreement with the European Union.
His refusal to sign the agreement led to protests throughout the country, with the largest demonstration taking place in Kyiv on Independence Square, known in Ukrainian as Maidan Nezalezhnosti.
The protests eventually transformed into a revolution that culminated in February 2014, ending with Yanukovych fleeing to Russia. More than 100 people were killed during the months-long protest turned revolution.
