- At just 13 years old, Destiny Smith is battling a grim diagnosis with her family in the McLennan County community of West, Texas.
“The first day that we told her the details of it, she was like, ‘okay, let’s fight this,’” Destiny’s mother, Jennifer, said through tears.
“She was brave the whole time, you know, and as a mom, the one thing you want for your kids is the best.”
Jennifer Smith is a Waco police officer and her husband is a Waco firefighter. She faces challenges every day on the job, but the thief she now battles at home is Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The condition is hereditary and tumors have taken over her daughter’s nervous system.
Destiny’s older sister has the same condition but her situation is not as severe. After months of surgeries and chemotherapy, Destiny is preparing to go blind. She has already lost vision in one eye and she says seeing through her other eye is like looking through a tiny stra...

- Helberg Barbecue, a celebrated Waco-area craft barbecue joint, is closed until further notice after a devastating fire destroyed its kitchen, trailer and heavily damaged its building, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.
“It’s the prayer and comfort from our God that’s getting us through all this right now,” owner Phillip Helberg told KWTX on Monday.
The Waco Fire Department reported the fire around 8 p.m. Nov. 26 in the 8500 block of North Highway 6 in Speegleville.
“The kitchen is gone, entirely, as you can see,” Helberg said, “There’s significant damage to some structural beams as well as the roof and insulation.”

- Misty Medina is thanking a good Samaritan after he recently rescued her from her burning home.
On Oct. 9 around noon a fire started in her home and at the time she was alone in the home, asleep in her bedroom. When she woke up, she found a wall of flames just outside in the kitchen.
”Thoughts are going through your head like ‘oh my god this is my moment,’” Medina said. “I’m actually going to die right now.”
With the door blocked by a wall of flames, the only way out was through the window.
”The AC unit on the window wasn’t budging,” Medina said. “I wasn’t strong enough to lift the window and that’s when I really started to freak out.”
Thankfully, Isaac Serna was doing some contract work at the home over and heard the screams. He’s never served as a firefighter or any kind of first responder for that matter.

Isabel Navarro, 35, is in the first weeks of her new job as a paraprofessional, or teacher’s assistant, at Spring Valley Elementary in the Midway ISD, where Isabel has worked since 2016 cleaning the classrooms.
She said teaching is a dream come true.
“When I was a child, I always wanted to be a teacher or a nurse,” Isabel said. “And I started working at 15 years old to help my parents at home and now I can finish my education and follow my dream.”

”They said we didn’t tow it, we don’t have any tow possessions,” Jones said. “So I called a couple of other tow yards and I asked them, ‘did you tow it?’ They said no. That’s when I called the police.”

- Criminal complaints obtained by KWTX claim a Central Texas woman acted “recklessly” in the vicinity of a gasoline spill inside an apartment unit, igniting a devastating fire that killed three people and burned an apartment complex to the ground.
Acacia Adams, the woman wanted in the fire at the Northgate Apartments, turned herself in to the McLennan County Jail on her own accord Thursday evening after three manslaughter warrants were issued for her arrest earlier in the day.
