“We’ve missed him so much,” West volunteer firefighter who grew up with Hykel, Robert Payne, said. “Eddie was always faithful at volunteering...he was one of those firemen you could always count on to be there and to contribute greatly to our department, and that’s been sorely missed.”
Hykel was killed March 28, 2023, after the driver of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling on the inside lane “disregarded the traffic control devices and struck the fire truck and two patrol units,” according to DPS.

Jennifer Smith is a Waco police officer and her husband is a Waco firefighter. She faces challenges every day on the job, but the thief she now battles at home is Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The condition is hereditary and tumors have taken over her daughter’s nervous system.

Children’s Minnesota in Minneapolis gave him an emergency round of chemotherapy and afterwards no cancer was detected, but doctors recommended continuing treatment for another two to five years.
However, Keaton’s parents, McKena Peck and Hunter Verm, decided they didn’t want to keep putting their son through chemotherapy.
Children’s Minnesota reported them to child protective services, which resulted in the parents being stripped of #medical #custody.

- Jenna Quinn survived the horrors of abuse as a child and is now one step closer to her law passing on a federal level.
“I understand what it’s like to suffer in silence,” Quinn said. “I understand what it’s like to wear the shackles of shame and I understand what it’s like to struggle.”
For years, Quinn said she did not disclose her abuse. She finally came forward when she was 16 years old.
She fought to pass Jenna’s Law in Texas in 2009. The law mandates training in public schools, charter schools and daycare facilities on the signs and symptoms of all forms of child abuse.
15 years later, more than half of states have similar legislation, and it could soon become a federal mandate that is funded by grants.

On Oct. 22 2018 Dr. Hull was first reported missing by his mother. After not hearing from him for some time she went to his home and was told that he moved out three months prior. It was around that same time that doctor hull quit his job.
Then on Nov. 26 2018 his car was found thousands of miles away at the Portland Oregon Airport, hidden and abandoned.

- Jason Nelson, a veteran hailed a hero after helping rescue women who were being assaulted inside a hotel room, is filing a lawsuit against Hotel Indigo in Waco in the wake of the fatal shooting back in July.
Nelson said he and his wife, Amanda, woke up to Jared Searles being violent and threatening to kill three women in one of the hotel rooms.
Nelson said after the third attempt to deescalate the situation, Searles grabbed Nelson by the neck, held him up against the wall, reached for Nelson’s gun and the two started fighting over the weapon. Nelson said this caused him to fire his weapon at Searles.
Searles died as a result of the gunshot wound. Nelson was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

”The Chiari Malformation is where his brain sits too low in his skull and it puts pressure on his spinal cord,” Michael’s mother Sherry Kelley said.
Sherry said this brain condition causes seizures. In the past few weeks he’s gone from having absence seizures to convulsive seizures.
”His right leg will twitch and convulse,” Sherry said. “They’re more violent than what we were seeing before.”
During all of this family friend Melissa Baddock set up a GoFundMe to help pay for their medical bills.

- Beloved Killeen High School football coach Greg Russell is facing his toughest opponent yet. The coach, with 29 years experience at Killeen ISD, is in the hospital with a brain injury.
It could potentially be a very long road ahead for the long-time coach.
On Monday he was transported to Seton Medical Center in Round Rock to get some tests that will reveal the extent of his injury.
On Dec. 28 coach was driving himself and his daughter on I-14 near Copperas Cove when all of a sudden he went into cardiac arrest.
”We as the coach’s family and this community are just so proud of my daughter,” coach Russell’s wife, Veronica Russell, said. “If she hadn’t been there we probably would’ve been having a different conversation.”
The truck ended up veering off the road and got stuck in a ditch.
”It was just through the grace of God that he pulled the truck over,” Veronica said.

Soto started the course work on December 4th and was informed this past week by the school’s Admissions Representative Jessica Millsaps that he had an outstanding balance of $820 that had to be paid for lodging, drug screening and licensing fees.

- The family of Michael Kelley, 5, who is diagnosed with a brain condition called Chairi Malformation, is embarking on a new journey they did not expect right before the holidays.
The Kelley family said Michael’s brain sits too low in his skull and extends down onto his spinal cord, which results in seizures and other complications.
The mother of the 5-year-old, Sherry, said Michael started acting unusual in June.
“It went from bad headaches to having pretty good nose bleeds. Those nose bleeds had some really high blood pressure,” Sherry said.

- A 10-year-old boy in a wheelchair who went to a local junior high basketball tournament as a spectator over the weekend ended up in the game after an opposing coach noticed him on the sidelines and surprised him by asking him to play.
Santino suffered a brain injury following a car wreck which left him unable to walk but that hasn’t kept him from loving the game of basketball.
He attends lots of games to support his older brother and that’s exactly what he was doing Saturday as McGregor hosted an area junior high boys’ tournament when Moody Junior High Head Coach James Little saw the boy, whom he’d never met, sitting courtside.
“We came here to the tournament and noticed a young man who was in the wheelchair, and he seemed to be having a good time and I just thought that I would want to give him a chance to be a part of rather than just watching the game,” Coach Little said, adding he approached Santino’s parents.
