Executive Chef Alejandro Najar and his partner, Chef de Cuisine Alyssa Osinga, have gone from competing on Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen reality show to prepping final touches for their opening night.

- (#KWTX) - A dining room table, the center of the King family’s gatherings for decades, now revealed to be a piece of history.
The table was bought from the RT Dennis Furniture store before it took the brunt of the 1953 Waco tornado, both in damage and lives lost.
The discovery of the branding on this table is a historical find in and of itself, but the King family matriarch is a survivor of the tornado and was next door to the furniture store on that fateful day.
“It kind of shocked us because no one in the family knew that that’s where it had originally come out of,” says Sean King, the son of tornado survivor Carolyn King.

- (#KWTX) Farmers have been praying for rain but some of them may have gotten more than they bargained for. And that much needed rain, became counterproductive.
Before the recent rounds of rain and hail, the crop for the cattle at the Newsom family farm in Temple would stand about 36 inches tall. But after being beat down, the crop can no longer stand on its own and has made a year’s worth of work useless.
“We were going to bail the hay, and it started raining so we couldn’t get into bail it. Then it ripened past the point that we could bail it, and then it kept on raining and now it’s flat on the ground,” says Charles Newsom.
Newsom has been growing grain for his cattle on a 65-acre slice of Temple, Texas heaven for almost a decade, and says he is experiencing a rarity in farming. Asking for the rain to hold off.

This led to gunfire and four officers were struck by rounds, including Det. Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie, who later died May 11, 2014.

- A Central Texas high school senior made history Tuesday after becoming only the second person in history to win a gold medal in the state’s UIL number sense competition all four years of high school, and he’s done it while overcoming the challenges of autism.
The only other person to achieve a four-year sweep of the competition was in 1979.
Luke Maxwell, 18, is a senior at Jonesboro High School, a 1A school northwest of Gatesville, and says he’s so proud to be a part of history.
“It makes me feel a lot of things, like I did something interesting, like I’m now a part of history,” Luke told KWTX. “Those are the main things. It’s a lot more, but those are the main things.”

- Western Belle Farm in West is known for its gorgeous sunflowers in the early summer months, but the recent downpours, hail and strong winds destroyed fields of flowers ahead of their annual summer festival.
“We planted our sunflower fields in mid-March, and, then, we started to get rain every few days, and the soil was not drying between the rains,” owner of Western Belle Farm, Taylor Huffman, said.
Huffman said the constant rain with little sunshine in between caused the sunflower seeds to rot. She did not give up on the flowers, though, and they replanted seeds in mid-April.
“Unfortunately, it got worse,” she said. “We ended up getting seven inches of rain in in the first week of May, which basically did in a good bit of the flowers that were struggling.”

- A 9-year-old Central Texas girl is recovering after a venomous copperhead snake bit her on a knuckle of her right hand two weeks ago in her backyard.
Eden Sibley, a third grader at Live Oak Classical School in Waco, spent three days in the hospital and was given four anti-venom treatments.
It happened as Eden was collecting snails just before noon on a Sunday with her mom, Suzanne, in her flowerbed near the family’s pool. Eden reached down to get a snail and never saw the foot and a half long snake lurking in some nearby monkey grass.
“I didn’t even see it,” Eden said. “I didn’t even see it because the snake was like brownish-reddish, so it blended into the dirt, and there was tall grass all around, and so the snake just jumped at me.”

Chris Barrington, 34, spent the last week in New York City thanks to a trip given to him by the JMB Fishing Foundation.
The foundation’s founder, Jimmy Bennett, along with his wife and two kids, took Chris and his adopted mom, Michell Girard, on the trip of a lifetime.
Jimmy met Chris after he was found by the Coryell County Sherrif’s Office in 2019 walking on Highway 84 where he’d been wandering Gatesville for two days. The only name he could provide officials with as someone who might care for him was his junior high teacher, Michell Girard.
A few years ago, Michell reached out to Jimmy’s foundation to help throw Chris a birthday party when he turned 30-years-old, and the families have been bonded since.

Thousands tuned on April 8 to KWTX’s live stream of the total solar eclipse as it passed over Waco in surprisingly clear conditions for the four minutes of totality. Many, however, likely don’t know the months of preparation that made the shot possible.
Dimension 10 Creative Services Director Daniel Hamilton and his team researched and practiced in the months, weeks, days and hours leading up to the rare celestial event.
“We’re not doing this as photography like a lot of people are with the eclipse we are trying to get this as live video,” Hamilton said.

It’s unclear how this wave of book banning across the country started, but here in Texas we often think of Matt Krause’s famous book list.
On October 25th, 2021, the former Texas state representative sent a letter to the Texas education agency and several school districts asking if their libraries had any of the 850 books he listed.
People quickly noticed that many of the books on this list pertained to race or sexuality; books like “Have I Told You Black Lives Matter” by Shani Mahiri King, “Prince and Knight” by Daniel Haack, and “The Handmaid’s Tale: The Graphic Novel” by Margaret Atwood.

- The black Saltmarsh caterpillars, also known as Woollybear caterpillars, can be found almost anywhere in Central Texas.
Entomologist Molly Keck, with Texas A&M AgriLife, says they are “kind of this black large caterpillar that’s pretty slow moving... usually, off of a plant just kind of wandering through your yard or across a sidewalk or a street.”
The caterpillars we see are mature larvae that will soon become tiger moths when they finish maturing.
Keck says many of them can be seen due to the increased temperatures and moisture in their environment.

Andy Kahan with #Houston #CrimeStoppers explains how the department got tips, “but the tips unfortunately did not lead to where we need to be.”
Kahan believes that there is more they can do to help to get the suspect’s sketch to more people.
Now, 10 electronic billboards around Harris County display Louise and the suspect’s sketch.
Kahan says that “the good thing about it is that these are all in high density high traffic areas.”
The billboard includes the Houston Crime Stopper’s number along with the ransom reward of $20,000.

- Whether an animal is hidden in the trees or swimming in water, Justin Cox can use his special drones to find them.
The recent flooding in Central Texas has given Cox and his team with his company, Backcountry Drones LLC, a unique opportunity to use their drone’s thermal lenses to find heat signatures of lost animals.
“They are able to operate day or night,” Cox explains about the drones, “if the conditions are right, we can spot it at least from 300 feet above the ground, so we can fly pretty high and cover the ground pretty quickly.”
Cox says they have already had success in returning all kinds of animals to their owners.

Giselle Vento, 33, and Kelby Noack, 35, of Waco, said their vows during the eclipse at the Woodway home of Junette and Leon Noack, Kelby’s grandparents, in a backyard ceremony overlooking Lake Waco.

- A Central Texas mom who started college more than thirty years ago, but didn’t finish, is finally graduating Friday, and when she crosses the stage, she’ll do it alongside three of her children also graduating from the same college.
Michelle Dery, 50, of Copperas Cove, says she never planned to graduate with three of her kids when she started Central Texas College in Killeen. In fact, they all enrolled at different times.
Michelle will graduate Friday alongside her 28-year-old daughter, Jessica Dery; her 27-year-old son, Victor Dery; and her 23-year-old son, Joshua Dery.
“Last semester, we were all talking about how many classes we had left to go,” Michelle told KWTX. “Jessica asked me, ‘how many more classes do you have?’ and we went to look and we were like, ‘oh my gosh, we’re all going to end together.’”

“Despite our best efforts, the overwhelming number of strays in need of shelter has exceeded our capacity, and tragically, we couldn’t provide the time and space needed to save every animal,” the Humane Society said in the post.

- The City of Waco and the Humane Society of Central Texas are struggling to come to a contract agreement, leaving the future uncertain, according to volunteers.
Although both the city and the nonprofit of the same name work at the Humane Society of Central Texas on Circle Road, they divvy up the responsibilities.
Patricia Meadows said the Humane Society and the city haven’t had a contract since 2022. She claims last month the city presented her a contract that would entirely cut ties with the nonprofit, so she decided to take action.
Meadows has been volunteering with the Humane Society since she was 13. Last week, she resigned as board president after she said the city told her they would no longer need her nonprofit.

On Saturday May 4th, her horses were outside in the rain taking shelter under a tree, but disaster struck when a lightning bolt hit the tree, instantly killing the pair.
“Those horses to me are like my kids,” Davis said. “So, for them to be there one instant to them being taken away in a flash... a literal flash, it’s devastating.”

Highway 6 was closed at Meridian Creek north of Clifton and at Neil’s Creek south of Clifton earlier Sunday. At about Noon Sunday, the Clifton Police Department said Highway 6 had reopened at Meridian Creek, but remained closed at Neil’s Creek and FM 219.
Valley Mills officials say Highway 6 from Valley Mills to Clifton may be closed up to three days.
“Right now, Clifton is a virtual island, with water all around it,” the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office further said in a video showing a flooding near 219 and 1991 right outside the city of Clifton.

- ABILENE, Texas (KWTX) - An Abilene-area family whose rescue by a storm chaser was recorded during a livestream of the tornado that destroyed their home is miraculously home from the hospital and recovering.
Hawley mom Kasey Lambert, 34, was seen on video that’s been viewed more than a million times carrying her daughter, Allie, 4, from the aftermath of the storm into the vehicle of storm chaser Freddy McKinney.
McKinney was filming the tornado as it hovered over the home of the Lamberts in the small community of Hawley, a town with a population around 600 and 13 miles southeast of Abilene.
Kasey and Allie, along with Kasey’s husband, Wes, 35, and their son Lane, 7, were all taking cover in the family’s closet when the tornado hit.
