- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - As this year’s Texas legislative session rolls on, one of the many topics on the minds of members of the Senate and the House is legalized gambling.
“Texans love to gamble, they’re doing it every place else, but here,” said Senator Carol Alvarado, who represents Texas Senate District 6 in Harris County.
In November, Sen. Alvarado introduced Senate Joint Resolution 16, Which would allow for legalized gambling in the state of Texas.
The proposal would allow for seven casino resort locations scattered across some of the state’s largest metro areas, as well as the legalization of sports betting.
She says the goal is to diversify Texas’ economy by creating jobs in an untapped industry, in addition to adding an extra tax revenue stream for the state.
“We’re talking about people who would construct all of these venues,” said Alvarado.

- LORENA, Texas (KWTX) - The family of a beloved mom and dedicated nurse is remembering her as “the rock of the family” and as a woman who “lit up every room” after the 39-year-old was tragically killed in a fiery wreck on I-35 involving three semi-trucks and six vehicles.
Jennifer James, of Lorena, known to those who knew and loved her as “Jenn,” was the only person killed in the wreck that happened around 6 a.m. near mile marker 326 in Hewitt, Texas on Jan. 15. Authorities say an 18-wheeler did not slow down in a work zone.
Jennifer’s family, including her dad and mom, Brad and Linda Erwin, and her son, 20-year-old Hunter, sat down with KWTX in the Erwin’s McGregor home to talk about Jenn.
“We consider her the rock of the family,” Linda said through tears. “She would always be there for whoever needed advice or just a shoulder to cry on.”

- LACY LAKEVIEW, Texas (KWTX) - Lacy Lakeview Police Department is asking parents to prioritize children’s social media and online safety after the department arrested at least 18 people over the past five months for ‘online solicitation of a minor.’
The Lacy Lakeview Police Department said officers have arrested 18 people in the city since August during an ongoing sting operation.
“We’re trying to take the preventative approach here,” Lacy Lakeview Police Department Detective Tyler Ziegler said. “Each one of these arrests, to me, is one less child that’s being victimized in these types of situations. The higher we can get those numbers, the better.”
Ziegler said the department noticed a large increase in children in Lacy Lakeview falling victim to possible predators which led to the sting operation.

Copperas Cove PD said on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, a single-vehicle accident occurred in City Park (542 E.R. Goodson Parkway). Police said Chaney was the sole occupant of the car during the accident and tragically died due to his injuries after the accident.
CCISD sent out an email to CCISD parents informing them of the tragic loss of a student.
“This is a challenging time for many of our students and staff at Copperas Cove High School and we want everybody to know that we are here to assist students, staff and families, while also respecting the privacy of the student’s family,” the district said in an email to parents.

The Contreras said the city’s letter is increasing the amount of stress in the wake of last week’s devastation.
According to the notice, the city inspected the home two days after the wreck.
There’s still debris everywhere and the homeowners say it’s a 50/50 chance this home may have to be demolished.

A local former businessman is involved with several other organizations that are planning to hold Trump accountable for that promise.
Gary Heavin, of McGregor, is the former owner of Curves International. He is working with American Patriot Relief to make sure the January prisoners have someone to greet them when they leave prison.
There are nearly 300 January 6th prisoners incarcerated in around 75 prisons around the country.
Heavin says they plan to have ambassadors at each of those prisons to make sure that when they come out, they will have access to food, clothing, a place to stay and transportation home.

- MERIDIAN, Texas (KWTX) - Avian Influenza, or the Bird Flu, is a virus that is passed from infected wild birds to poultry and other animals.
Since the outbreaks in 2022, according to the Texas Farm Bureau’s Director of Communications, Gary Joiner, it has only gotten worse.
“20 million were depopulated in the last quarter of last year because of avian flu impacts and consumers are seeing that we are almost paying 36% more for eggs than we did a year ago,” Joiner said.
Local farms, like the Karebear’s Cluckery in Meridian, say they are having to go above and beyond to isolate their flocks and sanitize their equipment.

#DPS Sergeant Ryan Howard explained what, according to their investigation, led to the 9-vehicle accident that took someone’s mother, sister, and friend.

The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch system, will be released in 2025, the company said.
In a new promotional video, Nintendo showcases a larger version of the Switch that looks similar to its predecessor. The video also shows the system’s controllers, or Joy-Cons, now attach to the side of the main unit rather than slide in.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will play Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, the company said.

- LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY, Texas (KWTX) - A family in Little River-Academy lost everything in a home fire, including their family pet, just moments before the turn of the new year.
“The emotions were trying to save our dog and if we could get Olive out. We were breaking windows, breaking doors, and seeing if she was trying to get out anywhere,” says Keith White through tears, recalling the nightmare start to their new year.
The family was next door at their neighbor’s house, getting ready to celebrate the new year, when White walked outside and saw smoke coming out of his home.
The White family was on the road for the first time in three days, to support their kids sports teams as the Academy Bumblebees played Malakoff and Thorndale in basketball. It’s the first step the family is taking in an attempt to regain some normalcy.

Jenny McCormick, owner of Master Your Life Forever, has coached thousands of men and women to their fitness goals in the last 16 years. She focuses now on online coaching and says there is one common trait her clients who can maintain weight loss have and that’s a total shift in mindset.
“If you want to keep off weight long term, it’s not going to be what you’re eating right now or how you’re moving right now or if you can white knuckle it long enough,” McCormick said. “It’s about making a few mindset shifts so that you can now be the person who can maintain this weight.”

- McGREGOR, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas family who just wrapped up its final year of a front yard light display which has attracted thousands of people in the past 22 years was honored by a local nonprofit for donating nearly $100,000 over the years from donation boxes they put up in the yard.
Roger and Lana Schmidt, of McGregor, were presented at the annual Barkin’ Ball Fuzzy Friends Animal Rescue fundraiser with The Jim Haller Humane Hero Award for outstanding leadership and commitment to help animals in need.
The Schmidt’s donations came from Central Texans who have enjoyed their elaborate and free light display off Highway 84 near the McGregor Airport.
