- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - In a surprising move, Waco Family Medicine announced on March 21 it had immediately cut seven percent of its staff and closed several of its smaller clinics.
For years, the Waco healthcare provide has offered affordable healthcare to patients across Central Texas, and these sudden changes affect both patients and staff.
Linda Garcia had worked with Waco Family Medicine since 1997, but last Friday, she happened to be one of 52 employees suddenly laid off.
“The supervisor came to me. She goes, ‘I need to talk to you for a minute,’” Garcia recalled, sharing how she thought she had done something wrong when confronted with HR.

The barbershop, which has been a staple of the community, is now under the ownership of Earlie Waller Jr. and his father, Earlie Waller Sr., who took over after the tragic death of former owner Kyong Cha Carcano in December 2024.
Carcano was shot and killed near the barbershop, leaving a void in the community and among loyal customers.
Following her death, her family sought someone who could continue her legacy, and the Wallers, were determined to keep that legacy alive.

Steacy Muñoz alleges this happened at Manor Middle School on March 11, the day after another student was fatally stabbed at Roy J. Smith Middle School.
However, Friday evening, she learned through an email exchange with the school’s principal that the district was planning to address her concerns.
“People at the schools are rude when they talk about bullying issues. They act like they’re going to help you,” said Muñoz.

Opened in 1989, the outlet was a hotspot for shoppers traveling off the interstate and, at its peak, was home to more than 100 stores.
From April 17-20, the city will be holding a “Mallmageddon” event as a final farewell to the building.
“We’ll bid farewell to the ghost town of empty storefronts and usher in a new era for Hillsboro,” the city said in a Facebook post.
A carnival will be held from April 17-20, Mallapalooza 90s Pop Up Club from April 18-19 and a Rage Room on April 19.

On March 21 at around 11:20 p.m., Texas DPS says they responded to a crash on Highway 14 near Groesbeck involving two vehicles.
A Ford passenger car was driving northbound on Highway 14 when it crashed into a Ford SUV driving southbound.
The driver of the Ford passenger car, according to Texas DPS, was pronounced dead at the scene and the occupants of the Ford SUV were taken to Baylor Scott and White in Temple.

“It’s kind of therapeutic to finally get it off our chest, and you know maybe this story will help somebody,” Zion and Ezra Aviles say.
It isn’t just the story of one tragedy, it’s the story of two. The family was still healing from the loss of their father, Mike, who died from cancer two years ago.

- BELTON, Texas (KWTX) - The Crutch family, who moved to Central Texas from South Korea about three months ago, is starting from scratch after a massive fire in Belton destroyed their belongings.
“We got to America, Dec. 18, but we finally found a place, and we moved in the beginning of January,” Lakoya Crutch said. “Our furniture got here Feb. 11, so we were unloading all those boxes from Korea at the time this tragedy happened.”
The Crutch family was living in one of the homes that was destroyed by a massive fire fueled by wind March 5.
Lakoya and Jordawn Crutch, along with their four kids, relocated to South Korea about two years ago after Jordawn was stationed there. They hoped to make a home out of their last stop in Central Texas.

It was the second home struck by lightning in the Three Creeks Subdivision. This fire happened just down the road, less than a mile, from a house that was struck by lightning in 2022.
The stunning lightning strike Saturday morning was caught by a doorbell camera across the street.
Loranette and Terry Baker were asleep like most when they were startled out of bed by the deafening noise.

Tal Raichman was just 20 years old when he was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease. “It’s a very slow progress, so over the years kidney function just degrades,” he explained.
Four years ago he went into stage five kidney failure, having been on dialysis ever since as they searched for a live donor.
“Because my disease is genetic none of my family members can donate to me, then my wife couldn’t donate to me because of other complications, and different people tried but we couldn’t find anyone that’s actually able to donate,” Tal shared.
Until they met Margaret Ranson, the founder of the nonprofit Bridge Sanctuary in Robinson.

Fey on March 14 also revealed 14-year-old Serenity Baker was stabbed in the neck with a 3.5-inch tactical folding knife on Monday, March 10.
“The EVOLV weapons detection system at Roy J Smith Middle School was not functioning that day,” Dr. Fey said during her news conference Friday.
The school district did not explain why the system was not working, and Fey added it’s also unclear if the knife would have been detected.

At about 11:25 a.m., an altercation between two students resulted in a stabbing, said KISD Chief of Police Erik Hydorn. The attacker was quickly apprehended and the student who was stabbed was quickly transported to the Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center.
“The victim succumbed to her injuries” at the hospital, Hydorn further said. A homicide investigation is underway. The Killeen Police Department confirmed the accused attacker is a female student.

- #KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Roy. J Smith Middle School was placed on lockdown Monday afternoon after a student was stabbed and killed earlier in the day, the school district confirmed.
“Killeen ISD is deeply saddened to share the tragic news that happened at Roy J. Middle School,” said said Karen Rudolph with Killeen ISD. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and school community as we grieve a heartbreaking loss today.”
At about 11:25 a.m., an altercation between two students resulted in a stabbing, said KISD Chief of Police Erik Hydorn. The attacker was quickly apprehended and the student who was stabbed was quickly transported to the Karl R. Darnell Army Medical Center.
“The victim succumbed to her injuries” at the hospital, Hydorn further said. A homicide investigation is underway. Police did not clarify whether the attacker was a male or female student.

- BELTON, Texas (KWTX) - A Belton, Texas family lost their home and most of their belongings in what they said was an explosion.
The Benavidez family said the Fire Department told them the likely cause of the fire at their residence was an explosion.
Virginia Benavidez said their planned trip to Austin, Texas on March 1 had been looking less likely to happen. She said her kids’ persistence was the main factor in their eventual decision to take the trip and spend the night. At around 4 a.m. on March 2, Benavidez said she received a call from a neighbor informing her that her family’s house was engulfed in flames.
“We had to drive back in not knowing what we were gonna see when we got here,” Benavidez said. “If it was gonna be fully burned down to the ground or what.”

- CHINA SPRING, Texas (KWTX) - Students at China Spring Elementary are hopping on the ‘Hogwarts Express’ to learn all about the wizarding world of ‘Harry Potter’ while gaining a passion for reading.
China Spring Elementary reading interventionist, Keima Zapata, started a Harry Potter Book Club this semester to share her love of the series and passion for reading in an effort to get students excited about reading.
“It’s not a traditional book club where everybody goes home and reads because I work with kids in...varying reading levels,” Zapata said. “What I do is I basically read to them. It’s called a book club, but basically it’s a giant read-aloud, and the kids can follow along or listen.”
She said the idea stems from a Region 12 literary conference she attended in the fall.

Killeen resident Xelia Williams attended for the second time. Now that her son can walk, she wanted him to experience the tulips in a new way.
“He’s having a good time,” Williams said. “He wants to pull all of them. We’re like ‘No, leave some for everybody else.’”
Robinson Family Farm owner, Helen Robinson, said the weather was the biggest challenge preparing for tulip season this year.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The first-ever Lego convention in Waco wrapped up its first weekend, and Central Texas Lego fans were not disappointed.
According to event coordinators, over twenty thousand Lego fans came to the Waco Brick Convention Saturday and Sunday to build and explore fan-made creations and art.
Master Lego artist Amado Pinlac, known as AC Pin, has been creating Star Wars sets and botanical plants for over 25 years and says that with Legos, you can create whatever your imagination can think of.
“We call them creations because they don’t have instructions, the instructions are in your head so the limits are what your imagination can do,” Pin said.

“I have a different perspective as a superintendent, but I also have a daughter on the team,” said Riesel ISD Superintendent Brandon Cope.
“The respect and the admiration that her and all of the other girls have for him, he’s grandpa, father figure, I think that’s a great way to put it,” said Cope.
The beloved coach suffered a sudden brain injury last weekend, which required immediate surgery.
