- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Texas lawmaker is pushing for a rare resolution in the Senate that would have the Department of Agriculture rename the New York Strip to the Texas Strip Steak.
Texas Senator Kevin Sparks, who represents Midland and Amarillo, proposed Senate Concurrent Resolution 46 on Tuesday to honor agriculture and farmers in the state.
“As a tribute to the state’s agricultural heritage, the state’s economic vitality and the contribution of the ranchers’ farmers and chefs who have shaped the steak’s iconic food culture,” Sparks said in the Senate Administrative Committee Tuesday.

- (#KWTX) Ava Castillo, 19, is battling Glioblastoma a month before her graduation from #BeltonHighSchool. The condition has left her unable to move, eat, speak or breath on her own.
Ava began noticing symptoms of her condition after a trip to Colorado in July of 2024.
“She got sick in July up there and had to be put on oxygen,” Ava’s mom Lori Castillo said. “And when she came home she just never got better.”
Ava spent the following months in-and-out of the hospital on different treatments.
"It’s like a nightmare you can’t wake up from, basically,” Lori said.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Midway ISD hosted a Special Olympics track and field competition on Friday, April 25, at Rice Field.
Athletes of all ages from Midway, Lorena, and Waco ISD came out to compete.
Track events included wheelchair races, relays, and various walking and running races. Field events included the softball throw, long jump, and turbo javelin throw.
Kiera Kutscherouski, an eighth grader in Lorena ISD’s “buddy” program which pairs students with Special Olympics athletes, shared why she feels competitions like these are important.
“I think it’s just important to spread awareness about these different spectrums,” Kutscherouski said. “This is a really great opportunity to show other kids how important it is to understand these kids and what they are going through every day and how they don’t get these equal opportunities.”

According to DPS, while stopped for a flagger in a construction zone an 18-wheeler failed to control its speed, colliding with the McCaffety’s car and killing all three of them.
Those who knew Connor say he was an amazing athlete, student, and person whose parents loved and supported him and his sister Kelsey.
“This is one of those families where you just, you can’t make sense of it because they were so close and so kind… just way too soon,” shared Brandon Puffer, the founder of GPS Legends Baseball.

Allison has been out on bond since July of 2022 after a judge dropped his $1-million bond down to $175,000. He has been on house arrest ever since.

Sophia Garcia, a softball player for China Spring High School, is back on the field after suffering a concussion during a game against Robinson two weeks ago.
Thanks to an outpouring of support from her teammates and coaches, the young athlete was able to return to action this week—and her comeback couldn’t have been sweeter.
After two weeks of rest and recovery, Garcia took the field for her first game back on Tuesday, helping her team secure a victory.

Folks gathered at the Milam County Livestock Auction and auctioned off a steer to help Kelsey with expenses during her devastating ordeal.
On Monday, March 31, Connor, Meghan, and Clint McCaffety were killed in a wreck in a construction zone on Highway 36. Kelsey was at a sporting event and not with her family at the time of the deadly crash.
Although Kelsey’s world was turned upside down in the blink of an eye, her community reassured her they are 110% behind her.

- MILAM COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas high school baseball player and his parents are dead after officials say they were hit by an 18-wheeler in a construction zone while the family was on the way to the player’s baseball game near Milano Monday night.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that I share the tragic loss of Connor McCaffety, a junior at Rogers ISD,” Rogers ISD Superintendent Duana Brashear shared in a Facebook post Tuesday morning. “Our hearts go out to everyone that is grieving this loss. Our entire district, and the communities we serve, are impacted by this loss.”
Texas DPS confirmed Clint and Meghan McCaffety died in a crash Monday night, and Rogers ISD Superintendent confirmed that their son, Connor McCaffety, died in the crash.

Ivy was visiting friends at the apartment complex in April 2024 when, according to his mother Jamie Miller, someone opened the door and began shooting, hitting Ivy three times in the back before fleeing.
“They were just having an average night, just hanging out, and to my knowledge, someone opened the apartment door and started shooting and shot my son three times in the back and shut the door behind them,” she recalled.
