Instead, a mother walked across the stage in honor of her late daughter, who died from epilepsy last year.
There were cheers and some tears, especially from Waco ISD mother, Roshaunda Carr.
KWTX first brought you Carr’s story last year, when she shared her desire to start a nonprofit after her daughter, Jakayla Gardner Carr, died from epilepsy in October of 2024.

On May 17, the Bell County Communications Center received several 911 calls regarding a tree-trimmer that had been stung by bees on Briarwood Rd.
Authorities say first responders observed a very dangerous and dynamic scene upon arrival.
The victim was suspended from a tree by a safety harness, covered in bees and in obvious distress, according to authorities.

- Dalton, Georgia (CBS News) — A 19-year-old Mexican-born Georgia woman who has lived in the U.S. since she was 4 continues to face deportation, despite the dismissal of the traffic charges that led Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest her.
In her first interview since being detained by ICE, Ximena Arias Cristobal told CBS News her biggest worry is not being able to stay in Georgia, after spending most of her life — around 15 years — in the U.S.
“My life is here, and I’m scared I’m going to have to start all over again in a country that I don’t know,” Arias Cristobal said over a phone call from inside an ICE detention center in Georgia where she is being held. She’s been held at that facility since she was taken into custody by a Dalton policeman on May 5 on charges of making an improper turn and driving without a license.

- AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) - Police in Austin on May 13 announced the arrest of Rodney Bremby, 34, in the death of Killeen Fire Department Captain Marvin Taylor III.
Bremby is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the deadly collision that happened at about 1:05 a.m. in the 600 block of E. Koenig Lane on Sunday, May 11.
KWTX learned that Captain Taylor was leaving a hospital in Austin, Texas after welcoming his fifth child. He was on his way back to the Copperas Cove area to pick up his other children to introduce them to their new sibling.
Austin police said Bremby was driving an SUV when he rear-ended the van driven by Taylor at a high-rate of speed. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Baillie Hillman, the owner of the horses, told KWTX she happened to look outside her window and noticed her horses were acting odd.
Once she realized the cloud of bees surrounding them, she put on a thick jacket and rushed out to save her animals.
However, after she felt the heavy stings and saw her horses fall to the ground, she realized these weren’t your typical honeybees.

Dean Hannah, 18, of China Spring said he was shocked that his youth coach, friend and mentor, Mark Outlaw, of China Spring, had held on to the bat this long and even more shocked to get it back.
“I was really shocked that he still kept it because usually old bats you kind of give them away or whatever and so seeing that bat in person after a very long time, it just brought back good memories I had when I was a child,” Hannah said.
Outlaw was a youth coach for Dean his entire childhood in all sports, as Mark’s son, Knox, is the same age. He took a special interest in Dean’s early baseball development.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - In December of 2023, Louise Wilson, a teenager from Whitney, was the victim of a road rage incident in Houston that took her life.
Although it’s been more than a year since her death, her parents are still fighting to tell her story, in hopes of finding the person responsible.
“When Louise died, I felt very shocked for a long time, and very hopeless,” said Louise’s mother, Krista Wilson.
“What was is no longer, so I think our new mission is to just keep moving forward.”
Now the Wilsons are taking a tragedy and using it as fuel to push for new legislation for road safety.
“Of course, with our daughter’s death, we really want to do anything we can to bring change to fight road rage,” said Louise’s father, Daniel Wilson.
