- Description
- Prosecutors have filed charges against a Tacoma man accused of chasing down and killing a man whom he found with his girlfriend at a Tacoma bar in July 2024.
According to Tacoma police, Chaston Philes, 24, turned himself in on Monday after being notified that prosecutors were moving forward with charges against him.
Philes cooperated with police on the night of the shooting and was released after being questioned.
Prosecutors say the delay in charging the case was a result of backlogs at the Washington State Patrol's ballistics lab. At a first appearance hearing Tuesday, a judge set Philes' bail at $100,000.

Jayme Taylor, executive director of communications for the Lake Stevens School District, said the district is working to determine what happened. “We’re just trying to figure out how it happened and why, and we’re very fortunate that everyone was safe,” Taylor said.
The Friday night fire burned a large hole in the school’s roof, charred rafters and filled the cafeteria with thick smoke, along with significant water damage.

- A campaign to defeat Initiative 645 launched Tuesday, with a boost from the governor and a major labor union, setting up what is expected to be one of Washington's most expensive and closely watched ballot fights this fall.
The "No on 645" campaign, joined by Gov. Bob Ferguson, food assistance advocates, parents, small-business owners and supporters of Washington's new "millionaires' tax," argued the initiative would reverse tax breaks and funding commitments passed by lawmakers earlier this year.

- Emotions remain extremely high more than 24 hours after a young man was shot and killed by ICE in Biddeford.
A federal immigration officer fatally shot 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford on Monday morning. ICE said in a statement that Guerrero was fleeing the scene during an enforcement action. However, Guerrero was not the intended target of the ICE operation.
According to ICE, a targeted surveillance operation began at 7 a.m. Monday at the last known address of a person the agency says was in the country illegally.
The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Pool and Hill streets.
According to Sen. King, the initial information provided by the Department of Homeland Security was that Guerrero was shot after "weaponizing" his vehicle.
In its first public statement, issued nearly 12 hours after the shooting, ICE did not mention that allegation. Instead, the agency said Guerrero was shot wh...

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., will wind through the capital around the National Mall on Aug. 23.
Trump set the race in motion with a January executive order, which directed the White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday to designate a race route through the capital.
“So, the president gave us all the directive, which I'm grateful for. We're going to celebrate America's 250th birthday, and he asked all of us to think outside the box. How do we make this historic and cool? And let's all do this together,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at the signing ceremony for the executive order this winter. “And he loves the country and loves the birthday. And so, we at DOT were working on this concept. ... But to think 190 mph down Pennsylvania Avenue...
