- Flock Safety is tightening privacy and accountability rules for its automated license plate reader network amid mounting criticism of the technology.
The changes could potentially reshape how law enforcement agencies in Washington and across the country store, search, and share vehicle data.
The company said Thursday it is reducing its default retention period for license plate data from 30 days to seven days.
It will also require law enforcement customers to use tools intended to identify suspicious searches and prevent unauthorized access.

- A 5-year-old girl is dead after what investigators believe may have been an animal attack at a home in Graham, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies were called to the home in the 30200 block of 92nd Avenue East Thursday night after a grandmother reported the girl missing while they were visiting a family friend's house, according to officials with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
While searching the property, deputies found the girl's body being guarded by a large, aggressive dog. They fatally shot the animal to reach the child.

The delay is the latest in a series of timeline changes tied to a major budget gap at the agency.
During the 2016 ballot campaign, Sound Transit promised a 2030 opening. A few months ago, the agency delayed the West Seattle expansion to 2032. Now, the projected opening is 2035.
"It’s honestly disturbing because it’s like when we vote for something, our taxes go up and we want to know, ‘Well, what’s the delay?’" West Seattle resident Chris Kelly told KOMO News at the Alaska Junction on Friday.

- The Edmonds City Council is weighing a proposed ordinance to greatly extend the hours that automated speed cameras can operate within school zones, increase the fees for tickets, with the goal of protecting students and families.
The proposal calls for the five active speed cameras -- which are posted within the school zones at Chase Lakes Elementary, Westgate Elementary, Edmonds-Woodward High School and Scriber Lake High school -- to be active 24 hours per day throughout the year.
Currently, the cameras are only watching for speeding during two 45-minute windows, during both drop-off and pick-up in the school zones. That drop-off window begins 30 minutes prior to school start time and ends 15 minutes after, while pick-up starts 15 minutes prior to final bell and ends 30 minutes after.
Since their installation in 2023, city administrators say that the cameras have been effective at reducing speeding in those areas.

While the Lakers sale itself is not expected to have a major direct impact on Seattle’s expansion hopes, the closing of a deal of that size could potentially cause a delay in the broader expansion timeline.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has remained adamant that the league will have a decision on expansion made by the end of 2026.

Rebecca Rouleua, owner of Take 5 Urban Market, said a regular part of her workday is making sure customers can safely cross 8th Avenue outside her store.
"We have lots of kids that come in and out every day. We have schools all around us and so they’re always crossing the streets," Rouleau stated. "Every day I hear the screeching of wheels."
A community group, Fix8th.com, has bought orange flags for pedestrians to hold while crossing 8th Avenue at Northwest 70th Street to help drivers see them more clearly. Organizer Eric Johnson said the group would like to see more help from the city to get drivers to slow down.

The questions come 17 days after the shooting at Seattle Center and a day after a heated Public Safety Committee meeting, where council members pressed Interim Chief Andre Sayles about the status of the investigation and the city’s communications that night.

- WATCH: Total solar eclipse across parts of Europe
- Runtime
- 1:39:10
- Date posted
- Description
- A total solar eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain, and a small part of Portugal. Beyond the path of totality, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across a much wider portion of the Northern Hemisphere, including the northern and eastern United States, most of Canada, much of Europe, and northwestern Africa.
In the United States, eclipse visibility will stretch from Alaska to North Carolina, though no part of the country will experience totality. The amount of the Sun covered by the Moon will vary by location, with the eclipse generally appearing deeper farther to the northeast.
During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon covers only part of the Sun, making it appear partially obscured or crescent-shaped. For observers within the path of totality, however, the Moon completely blocks the Sun. The sky can darken, temperatures may drop, and the Sun’s outer atmosphere — the corona — becomes visible.

Shelbie Boyd with Tacoma Police said the 40-foot vessel had lots of nooks and crannies, which is why it took multiple rescue missions over several days.
Police and animal control believe they got all the cats, but just in case, "we're still going to go back out there we're still going to keep checking on it," Boyd said.
Around 24 felines are now in foster homes.

Authorities have charged 47-year-old Shawn Hinson with first-degree arson and second-degree assault.
A Ring camera recorded the alleged incident, and the homeowner said an alert from the camera helped save his life after his son received the notification and called to wake him.
The sheriff's office released the video, and court documents identify the driver as Hinson, who is seen next to a corgi and holding two torches, including a weed torch.
Neighbor Dan Carlson said he was stunned by what he saw. "I thought it was nuts. Who would do that?"

The filing is not a recall petition, according to King County Elections officials. Filing recall charges is an initial step in a process that requires multiple levels of review before proponents can collect signatures.
The charges are now undergoing a technical review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
The recall charges come as the mayor is facing scrutiny for how her office handled the city's response to the Bite of Seattle shooting on July 26.
What do you think? Should Wilson face a recall effort?

Blanche said the defendants, mostly naturalized citizens from China, built a “multimillion-dollar cottage industry” to obtain fraudulent green cards for foreigners and “skirt the immigration laws of the United States.”
The indictment comes out of the Southern District of New York, but federal prosecutors allege the defendants arranged sham marriages throughout the U.S., including Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.
Blanche said some of the charged defendants acted as “facilitators” – orchestrating the scheme – while others acted as recruiters to pull in willing Amer...

- One of the key figures in the city’s response to the Bite of Seattle shooting is characterizing the city’s narrative about the response as “not accurate,” adding fuel to the fire at Seattle City Hall that someone is not telling the truth.
Detective Brian Pritchard, who was leading the Seattle Police Department’s public response on site on July 26, was quoted by multiple reporters at Seattle Center as saying the city was holding off releasing information until “dignitaries” arrived on site.
Three people were killed and four others were wounded, including a small child, after a shootout near the Armory on July 26 at 6 p.m. Seattle police have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the shooting, but he has not been charged with murder. Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles said Friday the killer is likely still on the loose.
